Big corporations are still making money off of you.
Who knows, maybe some of the ad revenue on that filesharing site are supporting the very corporations you're "not supporting".
I don't recall any agreement that the original musicians get some of the profit from ad revenue (even though it's that music that brings people to the sites, and people are getting that music).

if you want to support the musicians you love see their shows and buy a shirt, they get a bigger cut from those than they do from the actual music a lot of the time

Good idea, but remember that digital piracy gives nothing at all to the original musician.

this is true on the face of things
but if i had never illegally downloaded anything, i never would have discovered much of the music that i have bought.
it kinda depends on the opinion of the musician too
like if someone says that they are cool with people pirating their stuff im cool with it
but like if it's someone like JG Thirlwell who trawls through blogs personally asking for takedowns of download links then piracy is definitely not cool

Yes, but the point is that you actually bought it.
Considering how said illegal downloads are usually available for free, I doubt most people who illegally download things are going to actually buy it later if they like it instead of just downloading the rest of that artist's stuff for free.
Unless you can only illegally download a little bit of the whole thing; in which case it's basically a teaser trailer, in which case why is that illegal and not an acceptable marketing practice?
the thing with illegal downloading is that, since it does not involve physical theft, it only represents a loss if someone downloads something as opposed to buying it. like, if someone downloads something that they never would have bought either way, the artist has not lost anything, and they have possibly gained a new fan who will buy things moving forward.

actually studies have shown than people who illegally download music spend much more on music on average than people who don't.

that's what i really like about Bandcamp, you can listen to the whole album, or parts of the album that the artist chooses, before buying.
also my local record store lets you bring an album up to the counter to try before you buy. which is hella rad, as i almost never buy things without hearing them first.
that said, i have long since deleted all of my illegally downloaded music except for a few albums which i have been unable to find for purchase anywhere, though i did this for personal reasons.
according to the Oxford Dictionary of Computing a nerd is someone who spends too much time on the computer but has no actual talent, whereas a geek is someone who knows a lot about computers
i'm thinking these are just two words for the same thing but the one is more insulting
I feel like the man at the end of To Build A Fire, croaking "You was right old-timer" to a memory of an old man warning him of the dangers of the Yukon, or perhaps Charlton Heston at the end of The Planet Of The Apes.

This is now my title.
Math nerds do not talk about set theory.
They talk about how Moby Dick is not efficient at conveying information.

what's going on?
Then how does Mozilla and Chrome make money?
their defining characteristic is being pretentious opinionated boors

Hell if I know, google offers Chrome for free.
Probably ad revenue.
most would probably agree that it's unethical to pirate the music of a little-known, independent artist, for this very reason
