My old house was called Sunnymead. Being Britain, it was neither very sunny, nor contained much mead.

(Although I think there used to be a brewery called that somewhere in the area, which may have contained mead.)

Mountain of Faith depicts underage girls drinking, and also includes a disclaimer that you shouldn't drink underage because it's allowed in Gensokyo but not Japan. This amuses me.

Yeah, but I thought it was going to be poetic, given Spenser's reputation.  Or at east something like Gulliver's Travels or A Modest Proposal.

    I wasn't expecting THAT.

My new strategy for UFO (Hard) will be to bomb aggressively and summon a lot of red UFOs so I can get a lot of lives really quickly, hopefully faster than I lose them. It is quite amazing how fast lives will disappear in this game.

Fact: The Sherlock Holmes books are actually being written with the roles reversed. Watson puts Holmes as the hero to avoid hurting his feelings, and to hide his own drug habit.

This is not something they teach you in school, at least not in England.

But are they better or worse than (stringofrandomfigures).dll?
  • My dreams exceed my real life
    Not much better in philosophy.

Heidegger was a nazi, Fichte, Kant, and Frege were virulent racists, Hume defended slavery strongly, Locke invested in the slave industry, and Francis Bacon was a backstabbing torturer for Queen Elizabeth.

Yeah, but in L. Frank Baum's defense, he was probably insane, gibbering, and delusional after being tortured for years and forced to write sequals to The Wizard Of Oz and being crushed beneath the weight of tens of thousands of letters from children every day.  He could not excape the children.  Not sure he knew what he was saying after a certain point.

-note:  in all seriousness, I never heard that about L. Frank Baum, and if true, that would be an absolute travesty from an author I read as a child.-

The Whites, by law of conquest, by justice of civilization, are masters of the American continent and the best safety of the frontier settlements will be secured by the total annihilation of the few remaining Indians.

  • image Wee yea erra chs hymmnos mea.
"The Pioneer has before declared that our only safety depends upon the total extirmination [sic]
of the Indians. Having wronged them for centuries we had better, in
order to protect our civilization, follow it up by one more wrong and
wipe these untamed and untamable creatures from the face of the earth.
In this lies safety for our settlers and the soldiers who are under
incompetent commands. Otherwise, we may expect future years to be as
full of trouble with the redskins as those have been in the past."

    man

history is full of assholes :(
  • Born a Methodist, Baum and his wife, Maud Gage, “converted” to Theosophy three years before “Oz” hit bookstands.

Modern Theosophy formed in 16th century Germany, as practitioners drew on ancient myths and occult sciences to create symbolic meanings. The universe could be unveiled and fully understood, adherents believed, if only people learned to read its hieroglyphs.

Theosophical Society leader Helena Blavatsky organized a ritual and communal infrastructure into which Baum and his wife entered in 1897. Blavatsky preached about a world filled with interracial struggle, where a superior Aryan race toiled against “semi-human” Jews.

“Judaism is a religion of hate and malice toward everyone and everything outside itself,” wrote Blavatsky in her “Secret Doctrine.” Decades later, this and other Blavatsky teachings resurfaced in Nazi racial doctrine.
