i don't see what was so bad about that TVT thread either

and hate for literature studies makes me a sad particle
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
but then people say mean things about philosophy all the time so i suppose i can't complain
  • My dreams exceed my real life
Dissing philosophy for not being scientific enough while disrespecting science is the Yudkowsky way.

i thought he was a sort of amateur philosopher?  or amateur wannabe philosopher, if that's too indiscriminate

i've seen him say more-or-less complimentary things about analytic philosophy...

    okay webcomic

    Tbf, Lukeprog is not Yudkowsky.

He is simply a man who breaks up with his first girlfriend for her lack of boobs, then tells her this to her face and explaining it's all based in sound evolutionary psychology, then openly posts about this online.

    what
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
    these are terrible people
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
"He is simply a man who breaks up with his first girlfriend for her lack of boobs"

    seems reasonable
  • terrible people are why i love the fact that individual human beings are, by and large, irrelevant to the greater scheme of things.
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
you know i'm not convinced these are even real math geeks

any real mathematician will tell you that math involves a great deal of intuition and creative thought

lukeprog claims that this is a display of ignorance regarding how brains work

if it were only the former it would simply be shallow

the latter pushes it into pure scumbag territory
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
yeah, I guess the latter part is not so admirable
  • you know that thing where the more you clean your room the dirtier it looks.

    yeah

I should probably say he said it was dumb, and a learning experience.

    But still.

    also

terrible people are why i love the fact that individual human beings are, by and large, irrelevant to the greater scheme of things.

this is kind of a two-edged sword i think

it's a good thing for science and technological progress, mostly

it's a very bad thing for a lone person surrounded by bigots who would like to destroy or control that person
  • ~Stamps the thing with a giant red "Rejected" stamp~

Note to self, buy red stamp, words "Rejected on it"
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
I can make such a stamp for you for $22.99
  • More people have said that and been killed than there are thorium decay products.

Now now Miko, don't take my random comments too seriously.

tho i'm not sure individuals really are that irrelevant

sometimes an individual in the right place at the right time must be able to enact significant changes

i mean, that's what chaos theory would apparently imply, right?  i don't know a lot about chaos theory
  • More people have said that and been killed than there are thorium decay products.
    *hugs* I'm sorry. u_u
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
    It's ok

    Are you still playing Lunatic
  • More people have said that and been killed than there are thorium decay products.
Not atm but I will later probably and I find it fun. :)
  • terrible people are why i love the fact that individual human beings are, by and large, irrelevant to the greater scheme of things.

Let's be honest, even groups of people can be mostly irrelevant.

Also, please don't use the phrase "Greater scheme" even in the context of society being this big system integrated by humans, I think the phrase "scheme" infers direction too much.

We all know societies and the humanity that employs them really isn't scheming too much in regards to the entire planet.
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
You like a challenge, I guess.

    That is fine
  • More people have said that and been killed than there are thorium decay products.

This is a great point. :o Social Darwinism can suck on a feces-covered hazmat boot.
  • it is lone individuals that are statistically irrelevant

but of course one will almost certainly not win the lottery either, even though someone always does.

ALSO if you get enough people doing a thing it will become a movement and something will happen

it's the difference between, say, the one man sit-in Zora Neale Hurston described in Dust Tracks on a Road and the sit-ins of the civil rights movement.
  • Also, @ that recent exchange between Pillows and Miko.

Imi, while it is true you say things in jest, even those words can still affect people, even when they understand that your comment was made in jest, I feel that if you were really a friend to Miko, you would understand that even in Jest, you still griefed you friend somewhat and therefor you should apologize for that.
  • terrible people are why i love the fact that individual human beings are, by and large, irrelevant to the greater scheme of things.

true, but they are more likely to be relevant than a lone person.

i was simply using a common idiom, sorry if it does not meet your standards.
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
I am a person of infinite jest.

But, if I hurt Miko's feelings in any way then I do apologize.
  • ALSO if you get enough people doing a thing it will become a movement and something will happen

I was on the internet when Anon said they'd rid the world of scientology.

    How about peta? Hmmm.

How about Neo Nazis? Or Ku Klux Klan?
  • something did happen

    they failed
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
sometimes common idioms can and should be analysed, i think

they often imply things we don't intend

and sometimes, i think, this can influence us unconsciously, although that is conjecture
  • it's the 18th in Sweden

why is Sons of Abraham not on the Steam store yet

    you're slippin Paradox
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
ALSO the reduction of human beings to statistical points is disturbing to me

why does society matter?  because it comprises many individuals

individuals are capable of feeling, societies are not
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
ALSO ALSO quit savin drafts of my posts as i submit them, vanilla!
  • Tachyon said:

because if you take individual human beings into account instead of stats and trends you're a bleeding heart liberal blah blah blah bad pseudoscience with a conservative bent vote Huckabee.
  • if you take a wide enough view everything will inevitably become irrelevant.

if you look close enough, everything matters.

i guess it all depends on how you want to look at things.

although i thiiink some of the more extreme viewpoints on this sort of thing are probably not conducive to sound thinking

conservative people seem to consider themselves stone-cold rationalists

but they do so romanticize the free hand of the market, the american dream, ect.

it's simply another form of the wishful thinking they accuse liberals of
  • OK so this /rupture mix starts with "Get Ur Freek On".

    that's cool I guess.
