Something I've noticed about creationists, while reading RW: They word their criticism of science as if it's an argument in a criminal trial in the US, where the goal is to show reasonable doubt, not to prove fact (as it would be in a civil case). I have to wonder if some of them really do think they're Perry Mason. :P

i think that makes sense, tbh

you can't really argue with the facts, since the evidence for evolution and the age of the Earth and the expanding universe is overwhelming

so their best hope is to say 'yeah but it might not be'

also we live in a culture which privileges the Biblical narrative above all others, so i guess they assume that science is merely raising objections to the established doctrine

if they can argue that science *might* not be right, they win by default

Granted that we're culturally Christian, but science is most certainly privileged over culture. As far back as Maistre, defenders of Christianity saw that it was a losing position to say that Christianity trumps science: they had to show their compatibility.

I don't really understand creationists, but I thik they want to show that Genesis and science are compatible by "proving" modern biology to be bad science.

science might be, but science isn't really a doctrine in the same sense, it's more like a project or a method

i think it's accurate to say that specific scientific claims, like the theory of evolution, do not have that privilege, at least not yet, which is why people like the Intelligent Design crowd wish to show that it's bad science

and i maintain that underlying this is the assumption that if science is wrong, Christianity wins by default; nobody suggests that if the theory of evolution were disproven we'd have to afford equal credence to the creation myths of other cultures

Well, it's natural that people only know their own culture. Leave criticizing science because it claims humans have been around less than a million years to actual Hindus.
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
    well, yes, that's fair enough

i was just giving what i believe to be the reason for certain aspects of creationist rhetoric

namely the apparent implication that if specific scientific theories are wrong, the Christian explanation must be the correct one

I wonder in what sense the etiological stories taught as science aren't also myths.

Lesson learned: Xubuntu sucks at power management compared to Windows 8.1

With Windows I can leave the laptop on and fall asleep and there'll still be plenty of battery life when I wake up; I did the same with Xubuntu just now and it was down to 30%!

I'm cringing as I watch this A Link to the Past longplay because like omg the player keeps missing obvious things and like, generally having no manual skill and not figuring the patterns out. But w/e they get all the items and I didn't want to *play* the game again this year since that would eat up *time.*

when i was unable to play Madness Returns i liked watching videos of it on Youtube

but i would get frustrated, since i didn't want commentary, but the ones without commentary were also really bad at the game

that would make sense, since they need to stay moist

do you get newts?  they seem to like similar environments to frogs...

^^ Ah, that does make sense, you live in Colorado

I've seen a few frogs from the creek that runs through our neighborhood...

Well like, at least this player never dies, and knows all the fastest routes to 100% completion, but like, I guess I'm whining because I see things like consistently deflecting magic balls at the wrong angle or like, hitting electric enemies with the sword at the wrong time and getting zapped.
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
the most tiresome thing to me is when a player just wanders around in circles for ages when it's obvious what you need to do in order to progress

granted i've done that myself, but i don't make videos of myself doing that and upload them to YouTube
  • More people have said that and been killed than there are thorium decay products.

oh I hate aimless wandering. I always skip it. But like, the people I like to watch play are almost never the sort who don't know exactly what they are doing.

meh, I'm whining because this person gets hit a few more times than I would have. whinymiko
