I've always wondered what it is about Thomas that seems to captivate autistic people the way it does

Or, for that matter, trains in general

I'm fine right now; my main worry is whether or not we'll lose electricity

i was joking about the autistic thing, but it's a good question

i mean obviously you get people who really like cars, boats or aircraft, but trains seem to be a particularly common interest

you know foxes have a bad reputation among farmers

but feral or just poorly trained dogs can also kill or injure livestock

I can think of a few things...

Trains have tons of history, interesting stats, arcane rules and codebooks of the sort that doesn't really exist on the roads (though road signs kind of halfway count), and the whole mystique of being able to operate a machine that, until the commuter rail boom of the past 20 years or so, was becoming more and more of a niche application (and even before then, was something like black magic because cars have entirely different controls).

    Samuel Johnson? Autistic.

Queen Elizabeth? Autistic. Both of 'em.

King Richard I? Autistic, but he was French anyway.

    William Shakespeare? Neurotypical.

Oliver Cromwell? Actually great at dealing with people.

why does neither of these things surprise me

Also, there's the whole "thinking like a developer" thing. Even a relatively simple railroad switch can be a mess to schedule if it's busy, and large interlockings and junctions used to be run by machines that looked more like phone switches. Those sort of control applications seem to be interesting to geeks.

i spent about a minute considering how the sticky button on the water fountain was a bitchin catastrophe

The Centralia National Railway needs a logo

I admit, I had been picturing it as Norfolk Southern's rearing horse but with a unicorn

geeks don't spend enough time on control theory and that's sad

pontryagin's minimum principle was goddamn developed for planning train routes youfucks

well maybe it wasn't but something like it was i don't know

i should read up on engineering stuff, it sounds interesting

not right now, when i am more awake
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
my train (hah) of thought there went applied control theory --> engineering, if you were wondering

I dunno, I just worry that selling off most of its properties is bad

Belo is a company that's held in very high regard and one of the last anyone ever expected to sell...

It's useful to me in ways other than bringing WFAA (ABC's Dallas-Fort Worth affiliate, the largest station that isn't owned by the network) into the fold; they own ABC's old Phoenix station, KTVK, and in St. Louis and New Orleans they own stations that could allow ABC to undo disadvantageous affiliation switches...

But most of their stations are still being divested, and maybe traded to other chains for stations I want...
  • There, now I am fully Vriska again.
