Trains have tons of history, interesting stats, arcane rules and codebooks of the sort that doesn't really exist on the roads (though road signs kind of halfway count), and the whole mystique of being able to operate a machine that, until the commuter rail boom of the past 20 years or so, was becoming more and more of a niche application (and even before then, was something like black magic because cars have entirely different controls).
"It is a matter of grave importance that Fairy tales should be respected.... Whosoever alters them to suit his own opinions, whatever they are, is guilty, to our thinking, of an act of presumption, and appropriates to himself what does not belong to him." -- Charles Dickens
Also, there's the whole "thinking like a developer" thing. Even a relatively simple railroad switch can be a mess to schedule if it's busy, and large interlockings and junctions used to be run by machines that looked more like phone switches. Those sort of control applications seem to be interesting to geeks.

The Centralia National Railway needs a logo
I admit, I had been picturing it as Norfolk Southern's rearing horse but with a unicorn

I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
It's useful to me in ways other than bringing WFAA (ABC's Dallas-Fort Worth affiliate, the largest station that isn't owned by the network) into the fold; they own ABC's old Phoenix station, KTVK, and in St. Louis and New Orleans they own stations that could allow ABC to undo disadvantageous affiliation switches...
But most of their stations are still being divested, and maybe traded to other chains for stations I want...

i mean obviously you get people who really like cars, boats or aircraft, but trains seem to be a particularly common interest
but feral or just poorly trained dogs can also kill or injure livestock
