Navigating around Reddit is okay for the most part, in my experience. Download the Reddit Enhancement Suite, filter out the subs you don't like, and ignore the front page (which in my experience, tends to really be filled with lowest common denominator type posts, especially r/funny). If you're going there for images, it should be even easier to ignore the annoying crap.

Okay, so there's a game, hypothetically speaking; where in each level you fly a ship; and one quarter inch above and below your ship are horizontal red lines; and one quarter inch left and right of your ship are two blue vertical lines. Basic movement controlls (left, right, up, down with a normal controller; like if you were playing Touhou or something).
So, you are in a little square.
The thing is, the lines move (I mean, the two blue vertical lines would move together, and would always be parallel and the same distance apart; and the two red lines, similarly; would move together and always be the same distance apart.) across the screen; and you have to keep your ship in the little square.
Essentially, controlling the movement of the ship on screen; you must stay in the square, so the coordinates of the lines; recorded across the level; are your path. Let's make a slight change and make this path, this area; green., any point within the square in the level would now be colored green. Of course, nwo your chip must stay on the path.
Now, that we made the path- green; it will show up against the black background (of course, you only see part of it at one time, the level is many screens long). But we need a way to stop players from just not-moving and staying in one spot. So, we make the green path move at a steady rate ( or, rather, the path itself doesn't move, but the camera moves through the level at a steady rate, and so only part of the path is on-screen at a time; and the ship is at the same point on-screen always, unless you, the player, move it.).
Now, instead of a game where you have to predict what direction the square will move, you have a visible path in front of you. You can't go path-backwards, you have to go from the start of the path to the end.
Now we add background, and we have a basic scrolling rails level. But the player wants something more than left-right and up-down movement. Alright. Like in those dancing games with the falling arrows that you have to copy; we will change it so we have button commands (represented somehow on the path) that the player will have to do at the right time (as the ship passes the point on the path).
Now, mechanically; button-wise; as far as what buttons are pressed and what little joy-stick-thingy-on-gamecube-controller-what-is-it-called movement; we have, essentially; a game. This game is defined by this mechanical information.
I mean, what is a Sonic level, and how to beat it? You push the right buttons at the right time; and move the little j-s-t-o-g-c-w-i-i-c; and you win. Pick one winning runthrough of a sonic level; find the mechanical input (button pressing, jstogcwiic movement, time); and now you have the same mechanical information that we were talking about last paragraph.
So, mechanically, you could take a winning runthrough of a sonic level; and make it into a scrolling rails level.
Then, you could take that scrolling rails level; have somebody play it and win; and then reveal that they were actually playing a Sonic level!
Now, the fun of a sonic level is that there aren't rails and set button commands; you can run right and then left and then right and then left; there is an infinite variety of winning combinations of jstogwiic movement and button pressing that will win. Each of those combinations; as we said earlier, can be used to define a scrolling rails level.
In essence, a Sonic level is made of infinite Rails levels.
This applies to all games where you use a controller with buttons and/or the jstogwiic. Any winning runthrough is a rails level.
Therefore, you could take a game like, say, Super Mario Galaxy 2, and turn a winning runthrough of a level into a scrolling rails level.
You could do this to Touhou; removing everything but the path; and, as far as muscles and button movement and actual physical actions with the controller; it would be the same. Or, you could simply hack a touhou game to have the green path and button-prompts-points-on-path.
In a way, you could say that if you really wanted to win any game or level that uses jstogwiic and buttons; you could convert a winning runthrough into a scrolling rails game or level.
Those games or levels might not be easy (the green line might move really fast and you might need to do really fast combinations of buttons) but they would be simple; and the difficulty would be in the more physical aspects of hand-eye coordination, seeing the screen and reacting to what's on it.
Since the input is the same; all that needs to be changed in the screen; you make the screen show the scrolling rails game instead of, I dunno, L.A. Noire or something. Most people would agree that the scrolling rails would be easier; even though they would be doing the exact same thing.
So, in the end, maybe the way to make a person beat L.A. Noire would be to have him/her play a winning runthrough converted to a scrolling rails; and then at the end show him/her the L.A. Noire; and show him/her that he'she actually beat L.A. Noire.
