I don't really understand the objection to trigger warnings

Like, it's nothing more than a simple courtesy

"Hey, if you can't handle [insert potential trigger here], you might wanna skip this post"

Why does that make people so angry

because people slap them on everything which renders them useless

    No, no, that I understand

But every once in a while I see someone who just kinda rejects the concept outright and that confuses me

    oh, idk then

i guess the same mentality that causes people to ridicule most of what happens on tumblr
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
you know i think people love conformity, up until they run into a community of people with a completely unfamiliar set of standards and practices

then the knee-jerk response is ridicule

On an unrelated note, I really really hate all the preloaded crap that comes on smartphones nowadays

At least with the shovelware that comes on a new laptop you can uninstall it, but god forbid Samsung and/or Sprint give people that option

Because they are imprinted with hegemonic ideals in their youth and comply with them due to authoritarian personality traits or ignorance-induced fear of the Other.

    yes, that thing you said

your armchair anarchy sounds a lot more informed than my armchair psychology

Some of my family members have food allergies (not peanuts, though), so I can say from experience that "you can't hide from peanuts", while perhaps silly-sounding, is true.
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
    I'm allergic to nuts

you're damn right I hide from them

My mother is allergic to coconuts and sulfa drugs

My uncle is also allergic to coconuts

And my aunt is allergic to mushrooms

That's it, not counting the fact that pretty much all of my immediate family gets hayfever to some degree

i mean, i guess i associate conformism, and poking fun at people for being nerds or making bad fashion choices or liking the wrong things or whatever, with school bullies

that's probably an immature attitude to have

  • I'm allergic to peanuts, fish and cow's milk. I'm not sure about other forms of milk, but I'm definitely allergic to cow's milk.

Peanuts aren't actually that omnipresent, which is good because that's the most dangerous out of my allergies. Milk now, milk's frigging everywhere.

Not really, no. Favouring conformity over acceptance is not a very good attitude to have, and I honestly find it far less mature than total reservation of judgement in some respects.

    well, perhaps

on the other hand i feel i've often been far more tolerant than i should have been of people who were clearly trouble because i'm blind to things that set off alarm bells for a lot of people

it's gotten me into some pretty nasty situations IRL that with hindsight could have been easily avoided

maybe that's more to do with being naïve than being open-minded, but i think conformity comes with a set of built-in social defence mechanisms against ideas and people that are legitimately dangerous

that depends entirely on what you consider "legitimately dangerous".

to a lot of people, minorities are "legitimately dangerous". So are people not of the same religion as them.

So while it's true you might come to find you're less tolerant of people who could harm you, you'll probably end up pushing aside a lot of other people in the process.

That's not a job for conformity, but for personal standards and ethics. You shouldn't be letting other people draw your lines for you.

for the record i have no intention of prejudicing myself against minorities or people with different religious views

didn't really think i needed to clarify that but whatever

i'm talking, on the one hand, about people on the TVT forums who i gave the benefit of the doubt to despite them being blatant creeps and bigots, as eventually became obvious

and on the other hand, to people IRL who turned out to be dangerous and i was the only one too dense to realize it
