  • The Marble of Ulrmk is an orb that stands atop the steeple of the Silver Chapel. Though legends regarding it are mostly the same from culture to culture, the mainland races believe it to ensure the protection of the Silver Chapel for as long as it stays there, whereas the ashen dwarfs believe its destruction or removal to be the harbinger of the Silver Chapel's destruction.

Solution: Switch to Cutxerk for the remainder of October then go back to Kexruct on November 1st.

I just saw this picture on Tumblr with two separate trigger warnings for water.

I know there's nothing wrong with overtagging but there's something grating about it.

i'd say there is something wrong with overtagging

    it undermines the entire practice

there's no point in trigger warnings if everything gets tagged, no matter how innocuous

    Trigger warnings.

    For water.

Yes, I understand that the fear of drowning can make people averse to swimming and large bodies of water, but that is just astoundingly silly. I mean, wow, thank you for being patronising in your attempts to look concerned.

    tw: people called alice
  • tw: water and... tw: really wet water?

They were "water warning" and "trigger warning aquaphobia."

The latter is actually an incorrect blending of Greek and Latin roots.

I'd say the same thing but tbh the girl who did it is very sensitive and I can tell she's doing it more out of fear of offending someone than condescension.
  • image Wee yea erra chs hymmnos mea.
Aquaphobia is the correct term. Since hydrophobia is something completely different.
  • The sadness will last forever.
    Tw life itself
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
It's hydrophobia, which is also a technical word for the aversion to water caused by rabies.

Which only goes to reinforce my low opinion of this sort of tomfoolery.
  • Aquaphobia is the correct term. Since hydrophobia is something completely different.

I know that hydrophobia means something completely different but grrraaaah incorrect neologisms.

Not as far as I know...?

Although there is a separate term for the fear of drowning and another for fear of the sea.

Fear of offending everyone can only lead you to offend more people than if you were less preoccupied. She is not going to get chewed out for not putting trigger warnings on everything she posts.
  • The English language has enough ambiguity. It doesn't need more.

Hence why hydrophobia never should have meant rabies.

I actually never thought about that tbh.

As I said, it's an ambiguity thing. Aquaphobia came about due to hydrophobia being used for rabies.

I never really understood the idea that words blended from different roots are "wrong"

Like, there's a full spectrum of different languages to draw from, so why limit yourself to matching parts?

that's not the derivation, tho (and would make little sense if it was)

when the word was first coined purists kicked up a fuss

i think it depends, sometimes mixing terms from different languages can result in ungainly constructs that look as though little thought went into them

otoh i think a lot of it is just snobbery, because only somebody educated would know the etymologies of the words in question
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”

As I said, it's an ambiguity thing. Aquaphobia came about due to hydrophobia being used for rabies.
Yet in time hydrophobia has fallen out of favour as a term strictly applying to rabies and now more generally refers to that particular symptom of the disease. Having a redundant, somewhat linguistically muddled word is not really necessary.

Then again, does this really have a bearing on whether or not this girl decided to put an unnecessary trigger warning on something? Not really. I shouldn't have brought it up, but for the perceived incorrectness.

Trigger warnings are really dumb. You can't hide from reality.

    no you can't

hence asking people to show the consideration of warning you before presenting you with something that will trigger an epileptic seizure or a flashback, both of which are pretty dangerous
  • I actually have PTSD. Now what?

Now your opinions hold more weight but that doesn't preclude them from scrutiny.
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
i mean really, that's like saying allergy warnings are dumb

you can't hide from peanuts, but you still might have good reasons for not wanting to eat one
  • edited 2013-10-05 23:17:22
imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
that was maybe not a great analogy, since allergic reactions are often fatal

but a seizure or panic attack is not exactly a picnic
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
But at the same time, there are reasonable warnings and then there are ones that devalue the concept.
  • As someone who's allergic to peanuts, let me tell you, it is hard to hide from them.

They will sneak into your room. They will trace your calls.

They will destroy the ones you love to get what they want.
