i am not sure what to change my name to, but i don't want to miss the fun.
  • You can usually go to a study group and slip by with only basic greetings and farewells.

And knowing what to focus on means that you'll have more time to do stuff like pleasure reading.

Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs is 2spooky. Some of the puzzles are lame, though.

I realize liking things on the internet that aren't Valve games, Dark Souls, Platinum games, or Metal Gear games is not acceptable, but whateva.
  • video games are for lame-ass nerds

(*ollies off a half-pipe, catches mad air off into the sunset*)
  • a lot of people hate Amnesia 2 for no other reason than thechineseroom made it.

Which makes me, conversely, like it quite a lot.

May I go on a rant about something that bugs me?
  • Is there anything we can say that'll stop you?

(The answer is "yes." Because you value our opinions. But because your opinions are usually interesting I'll say yes, go ahead.)

I hate how people keep using the word "liberal" as a synonym for "open-minded", "Willing to listen to the opinions of others and genuinely consider them", "non-bigoted", "educated", and the like.

I hate how so-called "liberals" keep saying that people who disagree with them must be zealots, fundamentalists, unreasonable, bigoted, uneducated, or zealotrous unreasonable bigoted uneducated christian fundamentalists.

Because no person who is open-minded would DARE disagree with you.  Any person who genuinely considers other people's ideas and makes educated decisions MUST agree with you.

And it also bugs me how homosexual people keep talking crap about homophobes and vice versa.  People shouldn't talk crap about people; because it doesn't freaking help.  Look, talking smack about the bigots who are jerks to you isn't going to make them stop being jerks; it's just going to make them feel justified.  The way to cure jerkishness isn't through freaking mockery and derision; it's by becoming friends with them and showing them that there isn't all that much difference between people; and everyone can get along.

Look, you don't get to say that another group of people is all bad and that you really hate them; be it homophobes or homosexuals; bigots or minorities.  That does not justify you talking crap.

People are individuals with thoughts and feelings; and nobody was ever convinced to be more tolerant and accepting by a witty quip or an insult.
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
Aliroz, are you open-minded enough to accept the existence of almond ice cream
  • Aliroz, I agree with your opinions for the most part.

And you're just going to have to sit there and deal with it.
  • Honestly, it kinda sucks, but here's the thing. Liberals and conservatives are not functionally equivalent right now. Especially considering, for example, that Republicans allowed a government shutdown to prove some ephemeral point about how unpopular it is or something stupid like that.

And yeah I agree that it's technically possible to be a good person and a homophobe, but homophobia runs directly counter to being a good person. You have to do a lot to make up for the damage that being a homophobe does to your character.

And yes, if you're in the LGBT spectrum you have every right to be irritated at people who oppose your lifestyle for no real reason. Maybe being angry doesn't help, but neither does, y'know, bigotry.
  • Alright you guys, Obamacare has activated.

Everybody get your subsidized healthcare at healthcare.gov. Remember, Obama let the government shut down so you could get this.
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
the government is still shut down, eh?

    *runs amok*
  • As I understand it, the shutdown's primarily motivated by a handful of Tea Partiers. Most of the Republican party's kicking themselves for allowing them to gain power.

And I do believe that the best way to deal with prejudice is the proverbial hot coals on one's head. One has a right to be angry, yes, but one should realize the importance of appearances. The group that's depicted as attacking other groups always looks worse than the one being attacked. So, overemphasizing the anger and attacking, attacking, attacking makes them look less victimized from an outsider's point of view. And one needs those allies if one's going to make a change.

    Or something to that effect.

I apologize. Cognitive functions are on a low today.

and, yet again, the superiority of literature over webcomics is demonstrated
  • There's a reason why Rosa Parks was selected as the symbol of the Bus Boycotts, even though a number of other women had also refused to give up their seats. Rosa Parks was the most respectable out of the group, and her image as a bespectacled middle-aged woman with buck teeth helped the movement.

Likewise, schools always go over the bit in the March on Washington where people who look like me were blasted with hoses and attacked by dogs? Why? Because the people who held those hoses and owned those dogs were people who look like the people who often teach/learn American history. They relate to them, and feel guilt.

MLK's more popular than Malcolm X in schools because MLK's a more neutral figure while Malcolm X's more controversial. And they always cut out the stuff about MLK's stance on government and war because he's more palatable when he's (as a quote says) a doll who says 'I have a dream' when you pull the string.

    Sympathy's key in promoting change.

If someone is a bad person, it doesn't give the good people the right to be mean to said bad person.  You don't have to spend all your time with that person; you can try to spend your time with good people; but nothing makes it okay for you to be a jerk to somebody.

And many of the bigots oppose the LGBT lifestyle because it's what they've been raised to do.  They don't get to choose where they're born, what culture they're born into.  They do, however, get to choose how they treat other human beings; and must be expected to be kind to all despite their upbringing.

I know that many of the bigots are jerks who are just hateful; and that's frigging terrible.  Nobody gets to be a jerk or talk smack; that's just unacceptable; and LGBTers shouldn't have to put up with that.

What I hope is that those who are homophobic and the homosexuals can befriend one another; and that the homosexuals can learn that some people are raised differently and need some compassion and understanding so they can learn; and that the homophobic can learn that some people are just born differently and need compassion and understanding in a world filled with jerks.

Your upbringing is not insurmountable, and is not an excuse to be a jerk.

I guess what I want to happen is that I want bigots and the people they are mean to to become friends.  I want everybody to become friends.

Is it okay for me to think that?

So apparently the SA mod who shut down mock threads got cyberstalked by a weird offshoot of SA for disgruntled libertarian former posters until she had to give up being a mod as a result of it.

    Now mock threads are back.

The culture wars in SA are weird as fuck.

They don't mention Helen Keller that much period. Never knew she was a socialist.

She was an advocate for the blind and the deaf; and what she found was that certain of the blind people had been made that way in industrial accidents.  And then the bosses of said industries were not held responsible at all for these accidents; and the now-blinded people had basically no power.  This turned her against the capitalist system.

She also found women who had no other choice but prostitution; who got syphilitic blindness; and this turned her against the capitalist system.

Helen Keller also was totally okay with the Russian Revolution and its massacres.  Total Lenin fangirl.

My grandmother says that Malcom X and MLK were the Bad Cop and Good Cop, respectively, of the Civil Rights movement; and that a lot of the people she knew found MLK to be a scary radical until they heard Malcom X and his speeches.

My Grandfather says that they were kind of the carrot and stick.
  • Malcolm X cooled down a bit and became a more levelheaded activist after becoming a Muslim.
  • Then he got shot.
