Yeah, that's called "weeding", and a good public library will do that regularly. It's especially for books with information that goes stale quickly, like medical, financial or job-seeking books (not to mention about 90% of reference books, which is why most of them don't circulate).

mostly it's been large print books and dubious mystery novels
Interestingly, in the Coverdale Bible, "ask" is written as "axe" throughout. It varies based on the dialect in Old, Middle and Early Modern English; only relatively recently did "ask" become the set standard.
Is there like a severe lack of save points or something?
Dark Souls is effectively a roguelike without permadeath. You can't have more than one savefile for the same character and it autosaves really, really often.
I did not actually lose my save file, but I did completely invalidate all the character building I'd been doing. So the already difficult game is now much harder, and pointlessly so.
The barrel in question contained my class's trainer. So technically not, but given that I was planning on playing as a Pyromancer (both because it is the recommended class for new players and because I like lighting things on fire), I'm sure my anger isn't hard to understand.

Ah, so you permanently lost your pyromancy abilities.

It's more that I never got them in the first place.
Technically I still have the fireball, but that's one pyromancy of about two dozen.
