I remember being into Sonic fan-fiction back in the day and reading a Sonic grim-dark fic where Sonic was taken over by a demon, replaced Robotnik as the new, eviler, more powerful ruler of Mobius (this was based off SAT:AM) and then everything that had a vagina would be raped.
That was some fucked up shit, in hindsight. I think Tales was going to become a wizard or something...which, funnily enough, I think is sort of the direction the comic took with him.

In my opinion, it's great. It's novel-length, I don't know if that's what you're looking for, but it never felt like it was dragging (at least to me) and it'll keep you from running out of grimdark pony-ness for a while.
