Also, Georgia is the best common Microsoft font, next to the Garamond family, which renders a bit small here for my liking...

When an alphabet has such unrelated glyphs it can taste completely different depending on the word. “Fudge” is casual and contemporary. “Marshmallow” is rigid and classical. This is not a typeface. It’s a tossed salad.

    heh

    THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS
I'm reading random stuff here because I'm bored and I want to go home instead of writing code, and I came across an article that claims diet soda is as bad for you as regular soda.

    However:
    • The article depends heavily on a single study's result, which you're not supposed to do
    • The article was issued by Rodale, which is a "natural health" publisher and has been known to give time to quacks (some of whom think sugar is poison and artificial sweeteners are somehow even worse)
    • The article has been mentioned absolutely nowhere else but nbcnews.com and MSN.
So while the data in the study may be interesting, I'm not about to give up my Diet Dr Pepper or my Diet Mountain Dew.
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat

Also, Georgia is the best common Microsoft font, next to the Garamond family, which renders a bit small here for my liking...

    thank matthew carter for Georgia

    he's one of the greats

    There he is!

There are obvious things about it that are "off" (the mix of terminals that point inward and outward being chief among them)

I like how things that the layperson wouldn't ever notice are "obvious" to you.
These things are only things I notice upon close examination and/or after a while

Proxima Nova is commonplace and fairly attractive (a cheaper alternative to Gotham), but upon closer examination I noticed that the whole "optical balancing" thing ended up getting rid of some of the tricks that make a typeface more cohesive (e.g. the uppercase and the lowercase are different thicknesses, but the lowercase is smaller so it looks the same. PN doesn't do this)

    AU: This one: http://www.today.com/health/no-seriously-diet-sodas-are-terrible-you-too-4B11200933

Notice all the links to more scare articles. That's a pretty common yellow-journalism trick.

Remember the fuss people kicked up because Marc Anthony (American but of Puerto Rican descent) sang 'God Bless America'? That same blog covered it.

There are a lot of hateful, ignorant people on the Internet. But then we knew this.

Yeah, I prefer to just avoid the dumb and terrible people when I can and focus on being a decent person myself. I do not forget that they exist entirely, but I would rather try to lead by example than chastise the kind of louts who cannot and will not change regardless of what I say to them.

^ Or hipster beer that tastes like dish detergent.

That blog makes me glad the South can't actually rise again...because if it did, it'd be the next Nazi Germany. >:P

Ok, see, things like this are why I'm always confused that you don't seem to think you're smart

Because it's clear to me that you're exceptionally knowledgeable about a field few specialize in

And given that you intend to make a career of it, it's not as if that knowledge is without practical value

Well, yes. And thankfully, they're in the minority (as indicated by the fact that Ebina won in the first place)...it's just that that particular association hadn't really clicked in my mind until now.

I desperately need sleep--I'm running on only 6 hours, and I've been awake since a little after midnight--but I must wait for dinner to be ready because otherwise I'm not gonna get any until I wake up

    Nap?

    Set an alarm beforehand?
  • Try running on five hours of sleep a night for the past two night and then having to get up in 3 hours.

I have definitely noticed that, at least half of the time I'm shitposting, I'm messing with the sounds of words.  Their rhythm, their puns, maybe what music they could be set to.

Meaning sometimes matters, but -- such as is the case with puns -- it is secondary.  I think of something that sounds amusing, then figure out what it means.
  • Here's a pun for Cantonese speakers.

What happens if you shred an issue of a comic book?

    You get comic san-sai.
  • More people have said that and been killed than there are thorium decay products.

  • Cracked did an article on sexism in vidya games.

Pretty good stuff. Not perfect, but a good summary of the major issues in the medium while sticking to the all-powerful list format. Doesn't give quite enough credit to Zelda, but feminism in Zelda isn't clear cut, as many of you no doubt know.
