Carolyn Petit, a transwoman who works for the Gamespot game review site, gave the fifth Grand Theft Auto game a nine out of ten.
Now you'd think that this would be perfectly acceptable, since 9/10 is a really, really good score. But it was apparently not, because she had the nerve to take issue with the game's violent misogyny that it apparently has (I have not played it but see no reason to not take her at her word), which she presumably deducted a point for. This was apparently just unacceptable, and the straight white dudes of the gaming world decided that calling her by her birth name and threatening her on twitter were perfectly acceptable responses to her not giving their pet game a perfect 10.

Just because I put blue paint all over this green car and cover up all the green, that doesn't make it blue. I know it looks like it's blue but it's really green so don't call it blue.
That is kind of a bad metaphor.
I mean, I understand what you're talking about, and I sympathize, but a green car painted blue is blue. Unless the paint job is so bad that you can tell that it was originally supposed to be green.
Incidentally, there was a shooting at the Washington Navy Yard today. I'm fine (my office is in Arlington, several miles away), but the news stations here are freaking out.
Then again, this is the worst mass shooting in the area since Virginia Tech...

Duhh but that is why it is a good metaphor not a bad one.

No, a green car painted blue is green. The paint is blue. The car beneath is green. We see the blue paint but not the green car. Unless you change the metal beneath the paint so that it absorbs green light instead of reflecting it, the metal outside of the car itself is green.
If you change the metal itself, the metal beneath the paint, so that it reflects blue light and absorbs green and red, then it will be a blue car.
This is the same way that when I put on an orange shirt, my arms do not become orange. My arms are the same color, but are not seen.
likewise illustrations are colored ink on white paper. The paper itself is not gold and violet, with bits of red. The ink on the paper is.
So, you can make a green car into a blue car; but not by covering it with paint. You have to make a change in the metal itself.

Last night, someone was pumping cruddy techno pop in the neighboring dorm. Close enough to bother, but not close enough to walk over and scowl at them. After quiet hours started.
there are house showings and I have to let people in and then stay outside on the porch while they wander around the house for twenty minutes before deciding they don't want it because it's falling apart.

Oh. That sounds pretty dull.
Have any books that you haven't read yet lying around?

Apparently I missed this, but Lindsay tells me Dan Brown's new novel quotes Oppenheimer thus: "I have become Vishnu, destroyer of worlds."
That was ten minutes ago, and I'm still in a half-conscious haze. That's a level of bad writing I didn't even know existed.

Sorry, mudheads, but you will never achieve the glory that is blondness.
