so after having seen the first 3 episodes I have come to the conclusion that Wander Over Yonder is practically perfect

Craig McCracken can do no wrong and Lauren Faust is working on it too and it LOOKS FANTASTIC and Keith Ferguson is just as good as Hater as he was as Bloo and Jack McBrayer and April Winchell are perfect as Wander and Sylvia and uuuuuuuuuuuugh I have just met this show and I love it

basically things are shooting at you and you have to maneuver about and shoot back

A breed of shooting game, more often than not in 2D, where the player must fly and avoid obstacles and enemies and enemy fire, and shoot lots of stuff! :D Run-and-guns like Contra also are considered to qualify. :) And here is, of course, a more detailed article if you are interested.

a top down scrolling shooter wherein the player character (usually a spaceship or magician, depending on the specific subgenre) must destroy a large number of enemies while dodging a significant amount of bullets and other ordinance from them.

Earliest example I can think of (though there are earlier still I'm sure) is Gradius.

The modern danmaku shooter is essentially the same concept but moreso.
