  • one time i saw my father give my mother a bottle of perfume

the memory is almost genuine, but the mental image around the bottle is off, it is a fake, pounded in, a square peg in a round hole
  • down where the record store was, before the proprietor died, before we moved to Rochester, it was in a place called Blair Arcade

in this place there was a restaurant called Ferns, there was a dart board there

the restaurant is still there. i walled by it on the way to the hair salon where i got my haircut that i got before my boyfriend left me. the stylist was a very friendly asian lady who really did not know how to work with my hair, so we will most likely not be going back.

  • Derek Nash Acoustic Quartet - Love at First Sound
  • also there was a pool table there at Ferns.

There was a store called Shinders, I bought trading cards there, at first Pokemon, then yu-gi-oh

it was a small chain, doing poorly, and then it was seized due to the owner's drug habits and money laundering and stuff.

it was family owned, he had married in apparently.
  • we had a cat named kiki, she was very fat

when we moved into our current lodgings, she had to go to the humane society

my father did not give my sister time to say goodbye

my sister treated the cat poorly, we never should have gotten it

she brings up not having gotten to say goodbye to that cat whenever she feels like jokingly trying to make my father do something

i rather suspect that i miss it more than she does

I'm thinking of Ponyville's self-imposition against using unicorn magic for Winter Wrap-Up

    Anonus said:

I've always felt this to be arbitrary and time-consuming, because if the unicorns could use their magic it would be over much faster

I have read an interpretation that the earth ponies (Ponyville was founded by earth ponies, and this is the source of this rule) use this as a way to stick it to the oppressive unicorns or something
I think it's an attempt at tradition. Though, given that pegasus are allowed to fly, it is pretty arbitrary.

Also, Earth Ponies seem to have high-society types as well. They just live in Manehatten.

Another thing: if you have the power to control seasons, why would you even bother with winter?
CA touched on this, but it's probably a good idea to watch "Snowdrop" if you haven't.

Basically, Winter is needed for some of the animals and allows the earth to recover. Though, who knows how scientifically sound that last part is.

I remember Ponyville always completing WWU behind schedule

maybe they'd have been finished with it in time if they let the unicorns use their magic? (though Twilight showed them the magic of organization, which allowed them to finish in time, but before she came along it was probably slow as fuck)
  • we must have bought Totoro 40 times over renting it from that little video store

my dad would carry me on his shoulders on the way there, i would get a caramel as well from this other wee shop on the way.

also there was a park, i still go past it sometimes. there is a bust of someone there, if i remember correctly it is a bust of a philanthropist, or maybe a sociologist. more likely the former than the latter.
  • mom sold most of the books that were on the bookshelf, others are in boxes that i suspect will never be unpacked.

even though we went to the fair every year of my life before this one, i cannot distinguish any of the visits. they all just blur.
  • last year of middle school, state fair project. much research had to be done, most of it in the archives of the Minnesota History Center, much of it microfiche, the rest fragile old papers.

i bit off more than i could chew with that one.

i cannot remember where we lived then, i think in the house we live in now

there are many other memories like this, in various states of disrepair. they are all sunk in a vast sea of knowledge gleaned from countless books, most forgotten, but the contents remain.

my father made me throw away my first package of pokemon cards, because he said that they would make my mom angry for some reason.

This one sentence really sums up him and his relationship with me and my mother perfectly.

oh wow, i got that pack at the Borders at the mall.

years later, when that place was closing, and all of the furnishings were being sold, i bought a pair of the Koss headphones from the listening sections for 10 bucks, thus starting my love of good headphones

i also purrloined an audio magazine with a bunch of sample packs and VSTs on a CD

Hmm...what if, a long time ago, they had somepony as organized as Twilight to be their leader and could finish on time, but that pony died and that's when they started being late every year?

New head-cannon: The old Pony who was in charge started to notice the schedule was behind and allowed for the Unicorns to help with their magic. Which ticked off the Apple family (who basically founded the town). This pony quickly met with an "accident" because NO one messes with the Apple family or forgets whose REALLY in charge of Ponyville. Winter wrap up is actually just a cheerful reminder of that.

That aside, the "no magic" thing is MAD strict, yo.

Rarity uses NO magic to make the birdhouses, she's actually weaving with her mouth and hooves!

    Is this Math or Logic?

Once more, I am your teal deer overlord.
  • It's a logic class intended for math majors, so that they don't hit higher-level classes in a way resembling a melon meeting asphalt at 60 mph.

It's is an interesting class in general, and it teaches important skills. I just wish that it wasn't so very, very difficult.

Done with class a bit early.

Which is good, because I have to go pick up my sister from school!

One of the most basic ideas in math.

    Why.
There's something grossly ironic about the fact that such a nonsensical assignment would be given in a class meant to teach logic.

    Yeah.

For what it's worth, I struggled with my math/logic classes in college as well. I'm pretty sure I mostly pulled 'Cs' in them, but at least still managed over a 3.0 average overall.

The irony is that the simplest facts are the hardest to prove.
  • Miko said:

No, it's an inverse bell curve.

The hardest problems are the ones that are either really simple (which limits your options on how to solve them) or really complex (which means it takes forever to actually finish them).
