Lol, Sir Alec Guiness should have an honorary SA account.

i am in class so i cant listen, what is the general gist of it?
  • My dreams exceed my real life
"In the final volume of the book A Positively Final Appearance (1997), Guinness recounts grudgingly giving an autograph to a young fan who claimed to have watched Star Wars over 100 times, on the condition that the boy promise to stop watching the film, because, as Guinness told him, "this is going to be an ill effect on your life." The fan was stunned at first, but later thanked him (though some sources say it went differently). Guinness is quoted as saying: "'Well,' I said, 'do you think you could promise never to see Star Wars again?' He burst into tears. His mother drew herself up to an immense height. 'What a dreadful thing to say to a child!' she barked, and dragged the poor kid away. Maybe she was right but I just hope the lad, now in his thirties, is not living in a fantasy world of secondhand, childish banalities"
  • I think it says something that Obi Wan was one of his weakest performances and he was still hella better than most every other actor in the film

    “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
^^^ & ^^ Honestly, I think the issue is less the film than the fact that the kid claimed to have seen it over one hundred times. Sure, Guinness wasn't a fan of Star Wars, but there is a difference between being fond of something and obsessing over it to the point that it stunts one's emotional growth.

    ^ True point.
  • also a beeping metal can is easily the most expressive and loveable character throughout all six of the films

Still, we must never forgive George Lucas for ruining it by reminding us it's a shallow special effects heavy kids movie with the prequels.

    “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
^^ In an odd way, I think that actually speaks better of the films than it should speak ill.

^ And yet, the cheap special effects in the first manage to still look better than the expensive ones in the last.
  • My dreams exceed my real life
That said, seeing movies over and over again is kind of a kid thing to do. I saw Jumanji, like, thirty times when I was a kid and I haven't seen it since I hit puberty.
  • In an odd way, I think that actually speaks better of the films than it should speak ill.

perhaps, but it certainly says a lot about the dialogue.

^^^ Even by that standard, one hundred is a bit much. And really, given the period, how many times did he see that film in a theatre?

^^ Again: In the original trilogy, at least he let the actors improvise and rewrite their lines when the script was dumb.
  • My dreams exceed my real life
Why is there not a pdf of Difference and Repetition that's a good enough quality that I can read it on my kindle.

There's no Kindle version on Amazon, I'm reduced to this.

He might have been exaggerating, like kids do.

I think everyone is a brain in the same giant tank of LSD and no one's world is the same so when an alien comes to Earth all they will see is brains in a senseless mess killing each other, which is... not really much of an abstraction, now that I think about it.

I did, too. I can just point out how silly it is. Not sure about the beau, though.
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
Funny thing is, I watch it differently now from when I was a kid. When I was a kid I could take it at face value as a "serious" epic. Now I watch it as a silly special effects serial kinda thing and it's still enjoyable...just in a different way.

  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
I was never very into the Star Wars franchise

I still haven't watched the whole original trilogy

I don't intend to bother with the prequels
