For some reason Michigan's practice of designating their state highways "M-[number]" irritates me.
Probably because I associate that format with UK Motorways, and also because "MI [number]" would work just as well.

...I don't really know. I know that's not a standard 1970 US shield, but it's possible it's some older specification I'm not familiar with. (Which is quite possible, given that these signs are old enough to have been hand-painted)

Yes (red is for regulatory signs only, not guide signs) but I'm guessing they can get away with it since this is in an airport and not a normal public highway.
(At least, I assume different standards apply--Port Columbus has/had a bunch of signs in Helvetica)
