I'm not failing school yet; let's see how long this lasts.

  • About to purchase a book for a good 50% off from the bookstore price. Unused.

I am scrutinizing this site very closely so I don't get ripped off
  • So, the good news is that the site is Paypal verified, which means I'm probably not getting into some shady stuff.

Bad news is that the book that they're trying to hawk me was published in 1999 and the one my teacher's asking for was published in 2007. It's the same edition and the same authors, but there might be some issues with the book. Might be. The site's assured me that the versions of the book are exactly the same, and I'll get my money back if anything happens, but I'm still kind of suspicious.

And yet, they're offering free shipping.

"Well, guess what? Those barely exist. For every Public Enemy or Rage Against the Machine, there's a guy like Beck, who's supposedly surreal lyrics are often nothing more than pure gibberish, done on the first take. "Slab of turkey neck, and it's hangin' from a pigeon wing" is not some Riddler-esque enigma; it's Beck vomiting words into the microphone and calling it a day."

Thank you Cracked, you have taught me that literally every song Beck ever recorded was Loser.

No, it should cost more, because students don't deserve money; the publishers deserve money.

Yeah, all the money I earned over the last my whole life just went to these books.

Kind of ticked about that, but at least a publisher is getting the money.

^^ To be fair, a lot of Beck's lyrics are pure stream-of-consciousness rambling. It just so happens that most of them do have an underlying topic or point.

^ Publishers are middlemen and they rip off writers shamelessly. Authors deserve money. Booksellers deserve money. People that actually make books deserve money. Large-scale publishers? Screw 'em.

To be fair, Aliroz lives in a country where higher education is actually subsidised by the state, so students paying more wouldn't mean as much as it would, say, where Yarrun and I live.

Um, Sredni, as much as I like to imply that I live in Sweden or some Scandinavian country, I don't actually live in Sweden or any Scandinavian country.  I'm rather ashamed of that fact.

But, yeah, I think The United States of America should go over to subsidizing education by the state like Sweden does; and that way students could afford to pay more and the lower class and the poor could have college.

Also, there should be no such thing as interest or mortgages, food and housing should be free (but not water, because water is valuable; yo; and must be regulated at least slightly in times of drought).

Editors deserve to have their names on books the same as authors.

Aw yes, those lower-class students I know? Screw them, the big people need money. The middle-class people who are also having trouble? Same. You know, as if that isn't totally and utter ridiculous.

While we're at it, all those people who create clothing for us? You know, they don't deserve, or need, the money either. Let's give the money purely to the stores selling them, since the workers matter jack all. Let's do this for everything, because it totally isn't unfair to those who actually do any work, oh no.

Huh, I thought you lived in Sweden, or some Scandinavian country. Okay.

Well, the people working at the printing press are publishers, aren't they?  Isn't a publisher the guy who operates the printing press and literally makes the physical book?

^^^ The small press is pretty rad, yes, and editors are really important, but note that I cited publishers rather than editors as problematic. I am talking about marketing consultants, executives and other superfluous pseudo-gatekeepers, not the people that actually do meaningful creative or constructive work.

And yes, I would agree that a system that actually made living affordable for all people would change a lot of things. But that is not our current situation.
  • My dreams exceed my real life
Also rock star "not really saying anything just making words that sound cool" is distinct from pop star "simple song about well-worn topic" and it's dumb of Cracked to act like they're the same.

Not that both don't have a place in the world, but whatever.

Okay, yeah, marketing consultants, executives, and other superfluous pseudo-gatekeepers are pretty much freeloaders on the people who actually do the meaningful work.

Publisher, as in, one who actually publishes, as in prints, as in creates the physical book; as in directly supports the author; need moneys.

I guess we agree on everything except the definition of what a publisher is.

Semantically speaking, no. People that make books are not those that publish books. Those are simply bookmakers. "Publisher" usually refers to an individual who works on the business side of publishing.

^ It might be a language gap thing.

Oh, well, then, bookmakers deserve money for their hard work (and contribution to the process of the creation of a physical book); and publishers deserve a bit of money, too; because the business side of publishing is still hard work and is still necessary for the book to make it to the reader.  Executives and marketing consultants can go execute and consult markets in other industries.

    Actually, I live here

    image

Not really, my place-where-I-live is all not-going-to-be-said-on-a-public-forum; as is my real gender and name.  Actually, I think I already said somwehere one one of the sites I go to a few years back.

However, my family does come from Sweden on both sides, I am Swedish in heritage; my mother's parents were born in Sweden; and I do live in a valley with beautiful mountains that is currently in a drought.

I'd tell you, but my sisters have requested me to not reveal information pertaining to such things.

I mean, I trust you guys, but who knows who is lurking.

Nope, Al has recently copped to being from Sweden. I had actually suspected as much for a while, but had no real evidence...

^ ...that would make too much sense.

Nah, as much as it shames me to say, I may be from Sweden (in that it is the home of my ancestors a scant few generations back, and I consider myself to belong to it more than my actual country of residence) but I do not live in Sweden; nor have I ever been to any Scandinavian country.

I'm a Swede in everything except language, accent, and geographic location (my grandparents speak Swedish, and have Swedish accents and my mom knows a little).

My accent lives in the Western US; as is befitting for a Mormon.

But Yarr has a fantastic English accent despite being from the Eastern U.S.

From strip when 591 to strip 672, Order Of The Stick was the best webcomic on the internet; and no other webcomic before or since has gotten to that level.  Sure, 663-current hasn't been nearly as great, but still, for a while there, OOTS was absolutely fantastic.

Also, anything involving Azure City was absolutely magnificent.

Take a book, the poorest one written, but read it with the passion that it is the only book you will read - ultimately you will read everything out of it, that is, as much as there was in yourself, and you could never get more out of reading, even if you read the best of books.
