like seriously i thought canada sounded like a nice place but like all i ever hear about it is terrible racist bullshit and gay people being threatened with anonymous letters.
this is why i like minnesota we have all of the nicest things about the US and all of the nicest things about canada all wrapped up in an excessively lutheran lutefisk-y package.

You know
I do worry that, when thinking of countries to move to, I focus more on actual laws and the way the government is run than I do on the culture that would directly impact me if I lived there
You know, I can't really describe why I like the night more than the day. Maybe It's because luck favors the living or some other non sequitur like that :p
I've always been a bit nocturnal, The night, especially the dead of night, leaves me with a warm feeling.
There is peace to be found in the unseen, a sort of equality we all long for when you can't properly judge figures in front of you by eyes and ears alone. It's easy to hide things we might not like, but It also presents opportunities.
Sometimes I try to think of concepts outside of my ability to even rationally understand.
Like people point out just how little human eyes actually see, I wonder what color the things I can't see might be, but that's physically impossible as colors can't be applied to the unseen.
What color is something that doesn't exist in the light spectrum?

that is a bit of an oversight yes
i mean if you moved to south africa you could get married
and then raped to death with a toilet brush
laws have very little to do with the way the world works

True
I just, I dunno, I'd like to love somewhere that doesn't give quite so much power to private entities
So that tends to be one of the big things I think about first :\
The creature best suited to live in this kind of world is one that has grown to be aware of its surroundings.
I have arrived at a stopping point now though, there clearly exists life without sentience nor sapience, but take those features away from a human being and we don't view them as "Alive" anymore.
I cannot picture myself not existing, yet one day I will not exist.
I'm not too sure about how I would feel about it, when people state the word "clone" how much of it is generally accepted that your memories of your entire life would be "Uploaded"
even though i have a very strictly materialist worldview i still entertain the idea of reincarnation existing somehow so that i may one day be a real kitty

I don't understand why so many people seem to be ok with private security guards having any sort of power what so ever
Like, I see no reason why someone who is not a police officer should be permitted by law to handcuff and/or detain someone, but they are and I have no fucking recourse when they do
That's one reason why countries like Canada appeal to me; they seem to put much tighter restrictions on this nonsense

Well, like, I got tackled and handcuffed by some rent-a-cops a few weeks ago because I got pissed off that they closed off a parking lot and I started moving their barricades and signs out of the way
And it's like what gives you the fucking right
If you think what I did was illegal, get a real police officer
If you don't think what I did was illegal, but you just don't like it, back the fuck off
personally, I would rather be tackled and handcuffed by someone who is employed quite openly for the sake of a paycheck than someone who is indoctrinated with incredibly racist pseudomillitary culture from day one of the academy, given the choice.
my grandfather was briefly a security officer at a doctor's office (I believe that's where, anyway), I have far more respect for him--god rest his soul--than my uncle, who is a police chief.
england is full of bad food, lousy weather, and open and encouraged classism
canada is apparently full of racists
move with me to lake wobegon where all of the women are good looking and all of the children are above average
France apparently has one of the best healthcare systems in the world, along with the Fenno-Scandinavian countries and Italy. And while Parisians are massive jerks, the Niçoises and other southerners are apparently quite charming.

you have stated this so much more eloquently than i could in my sleep deprived state

Fair enough
I just sort of resent the idea that any random person gets to try and boss me around just because the property owner pays them to

Northern French are nice folk, I've never interacted with anyone from any other part of the country.
However, the nation isn't particularly friendly towards Muslims.

This is true of most of the world though. Either private security firms exist or subsections of the police are "rented" out. Would you rather have the latter? I imagine it's far worse.

On the other hand, police administration is pretty different from active detective work and extremely different from working the beat. Also, the idea of private security having less accountability and just as much power as a legitimate representative of the law—and in some cases hiring those weeded out of actual law enforcement—is pretty disturbing, if you think about it.
That said, on an individual level... that really depends on who you're dealing with and where. In New York? Trust the cop. LA or Hicksville? Trust the guard.

Not really. You're ultimately having to deal with one of two entities that have that kind of power and both, in practice, have very little accountability despite what the law might tell you. I'd rather go with the one that has less reason to bother you, which is usually the privately-hired guard. Usually.
Tangentially, park rangers tend to be the most anal public authority figures for some reason, in my experience.

NY is pretty infamous for having a bad police system, is it not?

Ah, see that's the part that bothers me more than anything.
That's why I would like laws like Canada's that restrict the power given to private security personnel.

well, not to gloat, but as far as I know (and admittedly I rarely have reason to check), the Low Countries are fairly nice places.
I've never heard anyone lobby a complaint against Luxembourg, and my only issue with the Belgians is that they are Belgians.
