For some reason I'm reading about a sinkhole that happened beneath one of my favorite highways about 18 years ago

On 4 March 1995, a portion of the eastbound carriageway of I-70 in eastern Ohio collapsed into an abandoned coal mine

The highway was closed for almost 4 months for repair...apparently this was the first time transportation officials got serious about the safety of busy roads built over abandoned mines

Interestingly, one little reminder of the sinkhole incident remains: the temporary ramps used during the emergency detour still exist, though they've long ago closed to traffic.
