Smee, Maiman, Doktar, Pavelier, Button-Lee, Juan Ovyu
The plot follows the path of a fictional pro wrestler attempting to prove himself as the strongest there is. Through a long train of ranked matches, he slowly gains notoriety as a wrestler as well as the grudging respect of his contemporaries.
The hero encounters Akira Maeda's fictional sister and falls in love with her, but she spurns his romantic intents, causing him to fall into a deep depression. To make matters worse, just before his championship match, he watches as his American trainer is killed right before his eyes. Even after becoming the undisputed pro wrestling champion of the world, it's a hollow victory without anyone to share it with. Deciding that everything was all a waste of time, he commits suicide.
More people have said that and been killed than there are thorium decay products.
Gradius is a really good series tho.
The challenge curve is less steep and also somewhat different in focus than your average danmaku, however.
hmmm that is true. Really old shmups are tough but kind of slow and plain I think. Gradius 3-onward look like more fun. I really like when shmups have cool patterns and enemy formations, and also bosses that give me a good fight. :)
speaking of hard games I'm streaming more Super House of Dead Ninjas tomorrow if anyone wants to stop by on twitch. I accidentally beat the game on normal mode off camera but as it turns out you just straight up don't get credit for that anyway, so it's gonna be a hardmode run.

yeah the focus on Gradius-style shmups is more getting and keeping your powerups. If you can maintain solid power-uppage throghout the entire game you're basically good but if you get killed end up back with your peashooter you're fucked.

You know, I'm thinking...
The red octagon stop sign has only been in use for ~60 years
And already it's become a nearly universally recognized symbol for "STOP"
