I always liked the 4:3 aspect ratio better than the 16:9 aspect ratio, myself.
It was always disappointing that TVs and computer screens widened to match movie screens instead of movie screens getting taller to match TVs and computers. :\
So anyway, I got that Blu-Ray player I've been wanting for just $4 earlier....I had enough rewards points on my credit card to get it. I'm watching TNG on Netflix now.
(The Netflix prints are based on the DVD release, and the transfer is awful. It looks like they used the Betacam syndie masters to make them. :P You can really see it on the credits; the dot crawl from the Chyron they used to generate them sticks out like a sore thumb.)
As noted previously, I'm watching the first season of Star Trek: The Next Generation, and so far it's pretty uneven. "Encounter at Farpoint" is a good introduction, if a little cheesy in places and a bit too long. "The Naked Now" is just...bad. It doesn't take itself anywhere near seriously enough, it screws around with characters in bad ways (since when can a robot become infected with a biological virus?), and you know you have a bad episode when the scenes with Wesley are the most watchable.
Yeah, the first season on the whole is pretty...meh. Not horrible, but they certainly could have done better. (And later on, they did, but I haven't gotten that far yet.)
I just tried to watch "Code of Honor", and UGH NO. I skipped it. :P
Eh, that's an infamous one...
You know, I was a rather young kid when those episodes first aired, and even I could tell that that one wasn't a good idea.
I actually don't remember a lot of the early episodes well, since I really started watching the series in 1990 or 1991. That said, yeah, the next episode ("The Last Outpost") has a far less awful premise; it's still cheesy in the same way as Farpoint, but it also has the Ferengi in it, and I always did like them.
Stereo I don't mind so much, since my speakers are only 2.1 anyway. Visual quality is definitely an issue, though I noticed that when the HD is done well, it really looks good. White Christmas is a movie that looks good on Netflix, for example, though I admit I watched it on the parents' 720p screen and not my 1080p screen.

Yeah, and it also requires you to not just say stupid things.
Otherwise I would be controversial.
