Remember back in the 50s when they'd record like Elvis singing YOU AIN'T NOTHIN BUT A HOUND DOG and then they'd turn the record over and reverse it and it was all NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP and people were all like, "That is actually the voice of Satan coming from that song."
Well, speaking of Ubisoft, they also have FarCry 3, which also provokes some interesting discussion. Hell, Rock Paper Shotgun got the writer for Spec Ops and the writer for FarCry 3 in the same room and had an interview with them.
I wasn't allowed to watch Ren & Stimpy. Mom thought it was too gross and violent.
Yes, it wasn't just me!
*overprotective mothers high-five*
*Hi-fives back*
Yeah, it wasn't just you. She hated that show.
Though I will never fail to find it amusing how my family got into South Park (another thing I wasn't allowed to watch when I was a kid, but mom totally had a point with that one). My little sister started watching it (She was somewhere between 10 & 12 at the time) and she got dad into it, who got me into and then we even got Mom to tolerate it after awhile.
The Eds and Courage are tied as far as CN's Golden Age goes (Samurai Jack would be first, because of the sheer quality of the animation, but I count it in the Silver Age).
They both seemed to have an excellent grasp on the surrealism that animation offered, juxtaposing it with normal environments (i.e. a cul-de-sac and a farmhouse).
Oh man, I loved Courage and Samurai Jack back in the day. Still do, but I haven't seen them in awhile. I need to go back and watch them again some time.
Though my favorite (western) kids cartoon will always be Batman the Animated Series. I would always come home and watch that with my Dad after school. That and Rurouni Kenshin. God, I miss those days sometimes.
The topic of "do games have to be fun" was brought up and uncerimoniously dropped. I have this to say:
you and Madass Alex would get along very well if you took up fencing.
Alex only brought up the "fun" thing once or twice, and his point was basically "'fun' is a relative word." Being Alex, he was wordier than that, but the point still stands that he really isn't wrong.

Certainly seemed like he said it more often than that, but Alex being himself, I may simply have percieved it as being more often than it was.
I actually more meant the presence of an Extra Credits reference than anything, though.
I actually don't think that that point is wrong, by the way, it's just not very meaningful by itself.
Batman the Animated Series is the only show that I have a boxset for. That is how much I appreciate that show.
However, I wouldn't say that it's a childhood classic. I only saw bits and pieces of it in the one year that Toondisney/Jetix/Whatever it is was available. The same goes for Pinky and the Brain, Freakazoid and Animaniacs. We discovered those in high school.
Well, a piece of entertainment should be entertaining, but that does not mean it should be fun.
Like say, The Bad Sleep Well is a very entertaining movie.
Buuuuut you'd be hard-pressed to say it is fun.
This is also a very good point.
@Mojave: I get the feeling that it's the former case. I like Alex, but dude can extemporise and expound like no-one's business. I find it entertaining, mostly, but...

We're the Mario Bros., and plumbing's our game
We're not like the others who get all the fame
If your sink is in trouble, you can call us on the double
Hangin' with the plumbers, you'll be hooked on the Bros.!
What, you don't think it's fun going through a creepy mansion, opening a desk cabinet and finding a bunch of skulls? Man, you must have one sick and twisted mind.

I would probably get along with Alex better if we ever interacted in a context that wasn't IJBM. The same could be said of a couple people on there.
When I was 14 or so, I made a timeline for CN (because I was a complete fanboy at the time and it's not like I had social engagements to go to).
Golden Age is the original eight or so that premiered in the mid-1990s (with Space Ghost being in the mysterious 'before' era). The network's kind of small, but good.
Silver Age was when they started importing shows from Kids WB, like Xiaolin Showdown. CN branches out and extends itself, resulting in a lot of good shows. I'd say that this lasts from 2000 to 2008 (i.e. when most of the Silver Age shows start getting cancelled)
Bronze Age is when the quality dropped, in the mind of my 14 year old self. CN Real happened, Johnny Test and Total Drama Island was introduced to the network, Alien Force and The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack aired (the latter is, IMO, the worst show that CN has independently produced). This is from 2008-2010.
Modern Age: What's happening now. Adventure Time and Regular Show are setting the standards for comedy, and they're adequate replacements for the comedy cartoons of old. Same with Young Justice and Green Lantern for action cartoons. Basically, it's alright except for the fact that the talking orange got its own freaking TV show.
I spent 15 minutes writing that out and now I'm not sure why.
Family Guy's alright, from the little that I've seen. Same with the rest of McFarlane's clone army, and South Park. Nothing worth offending my parents or my religious sensibilities over.
Okay, if you set that book on fire, you're going to have a fire-elemental~hatmonster~alligator beat the tar, the snot, the sense, the blue, purple, fuschia, black, heliotrope, rouge, cinnamon, and green bile; the stuffing, and the into-next-week out of you.

Your unending adoration for an obsolete form of communication is absolutely adorable.
I'm sorry that was Yoko speaking.
Anyway, I would not actually set something I spent $70 on on fire.

the point that is generally raised is that a game can be engaging in ways beyond just being "fun to play".
This is true, but it's pretty bad as a standalone defense of anything, least of all Spec Ops, which does what it tries to do pretty poorly imo.
(relatedly, "fuck you, it's fun" is also a bad defense by itself of anything)
Also, another show that I thought was alright.
Super Mario Bros super show. It had more to do with mario than the live- action movie.
I wasn't trying to argue, I just thought it was relevant.
Just watch the episode.

What do you want me to do?
Also, I watched the first 10 minutes of the live-action SMB movie last night. I don't even know what to say about it

I saw Batman Beyond on Toonami and really thought it was the coolest shit when it aired. Haven't seen it since, probably should fix that.
Also, the only show I own the boxset for is Serial Experiments Lain.

It's like two 10 year olds set their DND campaign in the world of HR Pufnstuf.
I mean that as a compliment.
hahaha.
you're not on the third season yet are ya pal.
I was really, really disappointed to find out that that picture of Gucci Mane was fake.
I only learned this because Ant-Live was complaining about it on my twitter.
"coincidentally", I unfollowed him the next day. Dude's gotten really full of himself.
With my face.

Also
I hated Jetix
Stupid shonen shit
hold on a sec I missed this
dude, what?
the guy who made Flapjack works on Adventure Time.
and really how are you gonna say that Flapjack is worse than Johnny Test
if anything it and Chowder were some of the only bright spots on the network at the time. Alien Force was good too, if divisive.
