imagine some kid from /v/ writing in to, say Total Film magazine, with something to the effect that "Citizen Kains sux becose it is teh gay lol", and then the magazine FOR SOME REASON PRINTING THIS (as the videogame press abundantly reproduced Ebert's and Soulja Boy's remarks...), WITHOUT ANYONE ACROSS THE ENTIRE FILM INDUSTRY BEING ABLE TO COME FORWARD WITH ANYTHING EVEN REMOTELY RESEMBLING A CONVINCING REBUTTAL.
i'm not defending Braid, but how on earth could one debunk the claim that "Citizen Kains sux becose it is teh gay lol"

it's a claim that is without substance, so there is no way to really refute it, y'know?
you could refute it in a very literal sense by saying that films don't have sexual orientations.

    but

I think we can all agree that the series I've recently developed a rabid obsession with is pretty baller

Rayman's coasting on it's popularity in the earlier generations, the Regular Show's coasting on the popularity of Adventure Time, which is, in itself, a cleaner version of the gross-out shows that dominated CN in the mid-2000s. Oh, and Daft Punk didn't need to come out of retirement.

    -scrubs mouth with soap-

was there a point to that?

also is anyone else having the site hiccup repeatedly for them tonight?

  • ...Well played, Yarr.

  • Remember back in the 50s when they'd record like Elvis singing YOU AIN'T NOTHIN BUT A HOUND DOG and then they'd turn the record over and reverse it and it was all NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP and people were all like, "That is actually the voice of Satan coming from that song."
Mojave: I have a few times too. I set the IRC topic to "500 Error Party House" because of it.
  • It was a joke, and an attempt to remember all the ways that I can hurt Tre through his taste in media. Y'know, for emergencies.

And yeah, the site's been playing havoc all day.
  • @Mo: He kinda just called out everything I'm known for liking these days. Not seriously, of course, but still, I thought it was funny. :P

Also, yes, the site has been a bit herky-jerky on my end too.
  • gross-out shows are just appalling.
  • Ren & Stimpy is legitimately one of my least favorite cartoons ever.

Boy I am just being full hipster tonight aren't I.

Apparently Spongebob turned into a gross-out show around season 6. I'd rather not know more details than I already do.
  • It's sort of incredible to me that Spongebob is still going.

Things like that particular franchise zombie are why I'm rather glad that Ed Edd N Eddy didn't get any more seasons than it did.

  • Boy I am just being full hipster tonight aren't I.

no you are too pleb to be hipster sorry
  • how long has spongebob been around anyways?
  • Ren & Stimpy is legitimately one of my least favorite cartoons ever.

Not really. I know a lot of people that found it repulsive, and even I find the Adult Party Cartoon episodes to be unbearable.

I can handle the older ones though, of course, I quite like them. Then again, I'm very easy to please.

I think it premiered in September 1999.

    ^Nope. 14.

TBF, only the first two seasons of Ren & Stimpy are really worth watching

well, you're allowed to certainly, I just don't like it.

It was always a bit of a gross-out show. It just got progressively worse after season 4. The bit that made me stop watching was when Squidward's inexplicable toenail got ripped out., which was in Season 6.

    Spoiler:
Yeah, after John K. leaves the show kind of starts shitting itself. And then when he comes back it begins to eat its feces.
  • We can do anything if we do it together.
Yeah, SpongeBob really is nearing Simpsons levels of franchise zombiedom these days.
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
    moo
  • The Simpsons... never really bothered watching the show because 20+ SEASONS DEAR GAWD

but I did, however, enjoy the movie

That would be the detail I already know. I've never seen this scene, and I refuse to.
  • I'm still surprised that Ed Edd n Eddy lasted as long as it did.

Because of that gap where no episodes were released, the show was on the air for 10 straight years. Longest running show on CN, in fact.

I'm still a bit iffy on the last season.

^^ I've watched some of the earlier episodes online (meaning seasons 10-13). 'S alright.
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
    wow

I kind of liked that show...

  • I actually still like The Simpsons.

Episode quality is spotty but despite what some might think, it always has been.

    Likewise Family Guy.

  • moo

    Yes, it was John Lemon.
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
I liked Ren & Stimpy when I was about 12, maybe, I think

There is an episode called "Ren's Brain" and it is the best one
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.

    moo

    Yes, it was John Lemon.
    groovy
  • I didn't really watch the Eds during the initial run because I didn't really find it that... good.

After the show ended and it went into reruns when I was about 14, though, I tried it again and found it to be genius. In a way, I kind of grew into it rather than out of it, as one would think.

Yeah, pretty much. Adult Party Cartoon was total crap, and his animation got pretty spotty after that.

I liked the last season alright (it had one of the best episodes of the series, the sadly underrated trip to the Jawbreaker Factory episode), but it was definitely not as good as the earlier ones on the whole.
  • I wasn't allowed to watch Ren & Stimpy. Mom thought it was too gross and violent.

So I watched Freakazoid instead. Fun times.
  • You are the end result of a “would you push the button” prompt where the prompt was “you have unlimited godlike powers but you appear to all and sundry to be an impetuous child” – Zero, 2022

If you want to get started, watch the ones from the early-mid '90s. That's all anyone really needs to see...

    Yes, it wasn't just me!

    *overprotective mothers high-five*
  • The Eds and Courage are tied as far as CN's Golden Age goes (Samurai Jack would be first, because of the sheer quality of the animation, but I count it in the Silver Age).

They both seemed to have an excellent grasp on the surrealism that animation offered, juxtaposing it with normal environments (i.e. a cul-de-sac and a farmhouse).
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
Courage the Cowardly Dog was amazing on so many levels.
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
The first nine seasons are usually considered the best.

The show feels pretty hollow these days...it's an institution but also a zombie if there ever was one.

The ways in which 20th Television can syndicate it will broaden if the show were to be canceled...they ought to do it

I wasn't allowed to either, I only watched it later in life.

    indeed.

Danny Antonucci has done nothing since afaik though. He was talking about doing a horror movie at some point but I have no idea if he ever did.

I heard a rumor that John Dilworth had died, but I don't know if that's true or not.

when i was a kid i watched these cartoons:

  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
I remember seeing The Simpsons around 2000-2001 and thinking it had obviously jumped the shark, so to speak. If you had told me that it would still be around in 2013 I'd have been all "ha ha sure"
  • edited 2013-05-14 22:05:57

I got into a Freakazoid marathon party a while back, and I'm still wondering how the hell I managed to miss out on it when I was young.

Also I need to marathon Courage someday
