The top sign seems to be designed differently, which is interesting, but the bottom design looks identical to the modern ones aside from some very minor changes in font and kerning—rust and paint fade aside, of course. In other words, not as disappointing as it could be, but a little bit sad, if only because of that durability.

"THROUGH" and "PROHIBITED" are in FHWA Series A, a typeface that was discontinued by 1970 due to concerns that the thin, narrow lettering made for poor legibility. Modern signs usually just have an icon of a truck under a "no" symbol.
The speed limit sign, yeah, is pretty much the same layout used today, though post-1970 ones are a bit bigger and use slightly wider fonts for the numerals.
