I was reading about AHCI, and it pretty much is an old SCSI controller, adapted for SATA. Specifically, it's like an Emulex ESP (ancient SCSI chip that a lot of old UNIX workstations and Macs used), in that it'll actually send the commands for you, DMA the data in or out, and manage the bus state.

Not doing something because it's not wise* is such a cop out answer, as if the relative intellectual contextual examination of an activity would do anything to placate the emotions and emotional drive it took to do something like this.
