Well, not generally, but they literally wouldn't call it in until the wee hours of the morning, meaning that we would have to get up for school, then check for whether a snow day was called.

The school district here is the same way.
This especially sucks because I should be too old to care (I graduated from high school in 2009, dammit)m but I still find myself sitting in front of the TV saying "C'mon, close the schools already!" because this annoying no-buses-for-high-school policy means I need to drive my brother back and forth. -_-

One thing the schools here love to do is the dreaded two-hour delay.
See, in this state, each district only gets a small number of "free" snow days, and once they've used those up, they have to make up any additional snow days by cutting into summer break. But if they just delay the start of school for two hours, it doesn't count against those days, so they'll tend to go for that before actual closures.
(It doesn't help that our superintendent is from Cleveland, which is right on Lake Erie, so the amount of snow we get here is NOTHING to him.)

here whether a school day counts as a day depends on whether or not we have lunch
so they'll throw out early releases instead of actual snow days
i only think i've ever seen like 3 actual snow days
because in Minnesota it can snow a foot in 6 hours overnight and the plows haven't come through and the mayor will call the superintendent a whimp for calling a snow day

we tend not to do early dismissals very often because here in suburbanland nobody lives within walking distance of their respective schools and parents get pissed off if they have to call off work to pick up their little brats
