Something that's bugging me (this is not ijbm i know)... is it wrong to assume people have the best intentions? i always figure stupidity is more probable than malice, and conflicting motivations or a lack of information are more probable than stupidity. i don't like to jump to bad conclusions about people.
What concerns me is i'm not sure at what point this ceases to be reasonable caution and becomes a sucker's way of thinking.

I wouldn't say it's wrong, but sometimes it's more practical to assume that people don't have your best interests at heart.
I think I'm beginning to become obsessed with Do You Love Me?'s HD version. It's so beautiful.
^^^ This is a reasonable concern. I suggest assuming stupidity over malice until you suspect otherwise, like in Imi's example. Just make sure that people are held accountable for being stupid at times.
@ Imi: Well no. But that is a rather extreme scenario.
On the one hand i should like to know why they were trying to beat in my head with a shovel, whether it was an attack of opportunity or i had personally offended them in some way, and whether there was a misunderstanding involved.
On the other, information is not adequate protection against blunt trauma.
Sacrifice a limb to the Shedded Goat at the zenith of the Thrice-Crowned Moon. Next, sacrifice your firstborn child at the Cuckoo's Nest, with a blade of finest lithium. Finally, carefully remove your eye and place it within the Red Lion's mouth.
Remember back in the 50s when they'd record like Elvis singing YOU AIN'T NOTHIN BUT A HOUND DOG and then they'd turn the record over and reverse it and it was all NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP and people were all like, "That is actually the voice of Satan coming from that song."
That alien feeling when you're watching TV in another city and Jeopardy comes on at 7:00 instead of 7:30.
Addendnum: They should be held accountable when their stupidity causes notable harm to themselves or others.
That is reasonable.
i guess i just kinda wish that 'stupidity' and 'harm' weren't themselves so contentious. A lot of people who seem stupid or malicious are in reality trying to prevent what they take to be harm or oppose what they take to be stupidity and the whole thing is a confusing mess.

at some point you have to stop trying to guess what the other person is thinking and just worry about how it affects you.

I was watching Jeopardy! for the first time in a while this evening, and I was surprised to learn that it comes on at 6:30 on the station that airs it here in Atlanta.
That's what led my train of thought to that quote.
There's a lot of beating around the bush about whether people "mean" the things they do. Sometimes it's a worthwhile discussion to have, but usually it's not.
This can be related to everything from trolling, to parody, to crime.
i like to understand where people are coming from. i feel that this minimizes misunderstandings that are unpleasant for all concerned, and can point to more efficient ways to resolve disputes.

"After the Vicky Pryce trial outcome, would you want your fate decided by a jury?"
Ah, British tabloids. Where else could you find "The jury system screwed up on a single trial, BURN THE WHOLE THING TO THE GROUND."
I hope this isn't too horrible of me, but I'm terrified of going on a jury because I'm convinced I'll end up making the wrong decision. Being an autismal spergdude doesn't help this at all.

Sometimes.
But other times people use that mentality as a weapon against you, and that's when it stops becoming a good thing to do.

I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
I think between 1999 and 2006, J!'s first-runs were at 3:30PM (KMGH had a 6PM newscast from 1999 to 2006; its immediate predecessor and successor in this slot is Jeopardy!).
After the 6PM news got canceled and replaced with J!, they kept using the 3:30 slot for repeats of older episodes (they started at Ken Jennings's winning streak, I think) until the 3PM hour was filled with Katie last year.
But other times people use that mentality as a weapon against you, and that's when it stops becoming a good thing to do.
i see. i can certainly see why this is pragmatic.
Insincerity and the practice of second-guessing other people's motives are difficult concepts for me, but don't seem to give most people any difficulty.
More generally; the site on the whole is perfectly content to write essays about the finer points of video game design but when something actually worth caring about comes up they're all slack jaws and glassy eyes.
Thank you for informing me that the field I'm qualified in isn't something to care about. I'd better get back to college and do a few more years on something more important.
Phrased more neutrally. I am annoyed at the site's preoccupation with game/anime/comicbook talk to the detriment of ever being able to talk about anything else.
I don't particularly see what makes those three mediums more important than any other, and I don't see why my criticism is inherently more or less silly than anything that's ever been said in any of those threads.
And a small part of it is jealousy, in all honesty.
Baauer's been making music for less time than I have, has less than a dozen songs, but he has a record deal on one of the most critically acclaimed labels out right now and is currently working with fucking Just-Blaze.
He's not better than me, I can make catchy electro-trap too, and we use the same fucking equpiment with the caveat that he uses Ableton instead of FL Studio.

i guess because those are common interests to most IJBMers; there's obviously no intrinsic reason why they'd matter more than music/books/Western animation/live action.

Sometimes I feel weird for being more into Western animation than most tropers/ex-tropers are
Also I didn't tend to think of things as "fandoms" until fairly recently (I blame this on spending a lot of time on work-agnostic sites like Toon Zone and TV Tropes, though they grew out of the Animaniacs and Buffy the Vampire Slayer fandoms respectively)

Assassin poems, Poems that shoot

and take their weapons leaving them dead

@ Yarrun: Everyone is stupid sometimes, though.
@ Deathonabun: What's a celebrity of the heap?

In Denver the first-run Jeopardy! airs at 6:00 (on KMGH, the ABC station)
It was like someone had destroyed the laws of the universe or something.
it's true.

i have yet to see compelling evidence of this.
Something happen?

Not to say Insanity Addict isn't being a dumbass about this, because he is.
oh here we go.
you know what? never mind, forget I said anything.

the article I linked to explains it far better than I do, admittedly. And a small part of it is jealousy, in all honesty.

It's hypocritical, really.
