ABC's stubbornly in third place, and it pursues a female-focused strategy that doesn't do it many favors competing with the other three major networks.
Admittedly I rarely pay attention to it and don't watch it very often so schedule shuffling might not be my forte
Someone on TV by the Numbers suggested putting Malibu Country and Nashville together because both are country-themed (MC stars Reba McEntire and Nashville makes country music a central point)
There's been suggestions of pairing a laugh track show with one without a laugh track which I'm not sure would work

That's how it usually is, but the TV playing field is mostly comprised of over-the-air and cable networks now
ABC has to compete with cable too (even though IRL their corporate siblings include cable channels ESPN, Disney Channel, and ABC Family, all very popular)
Granted their shows still draw large audiences but most often they get compared with CBS, Fox, and NBC
As of now the dominant network is CBS, with Fox in second, ABC in third, NBC in fourth, and relative newcomer The CW (the result of a merger between the money-losing UPN and WB networks) in fifth, though The CW aims its shows at a younger, more female audience than the other networks
the internet is more interactive, which in my opinion makes it better than TV. Also has a wider range of content. And it's good for downloading stuff like games and music and porn

Also, The CW is half-owned by CBS, with the other half owned by Time Warner (the "C" is for CBS and the "W" for Warner Bros.)
I think that The CW would do better were it a cable channel instead of an over-the-air network; the over-the-air networks are aimed at a more general audience than niche-friendly cable channels

Remember back in the 50s when they'd record like Elvis singing YOU AIN'T NOTHIN BUT A HOUND DOG and then they'd turn the record over and reverse it and it was all NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP and people were all like, "That is actually the voice of Satan coming from that song."
