I don't know if I've mentioned this before, but the bottom two reviews of Skyward Sword on Metacritic have "it's too similar" and "it's too different" as their main argument.
Maybe it's too similar in bad respects and too different from the parts people enjoyed previously?
I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
Sometimes I want to start a video game site in the ABC Inc world
But I hardly follow the gaming press anyway and I worry that avid tech and gaming news consumers would stay away from any tech and gaming sites owned by large corporations
What I was saying is that it's hard to give a fair review with bias.
No it isn't. :D What is hard is what professional critics do: trying to express the opinion that their boss commands them to express, which the publisher in turn demanded to the boss to be expressed by the boss's employee. Even if a game is just un-fun schlock, if the boss says they must give it an 8.0, then they must write their review such that it convinces the readers that their game is worthy of this ten-scale rating (btw I think 10-scale ratings are stupid).
Writing a fair review is easy. We all probably do it all the time! You play the game and then describe it! :) Even if you hate the gameplay this does not deter readers from liking it.
You seem to be kind of missing the point. If you open up a review of, say, Final Fantasy X by saying something like "I hate all JRPGs" and your criticisms of the game are:
*It's linear
*The cutscenes are different from the gameplay
*Random battles are annoying
then while your criticisms are technically valid they have different values for different people reading the review. A fan of JRPGs will accept those flaws and love it anyway.
Well that isn't a review, that's a list of features. It's the difference between "Final Fantasy X is a linear game wherein the cutscenes are completely segregated from the gameplay, and there are random encounters" and "Final Fantasy X sucks because it's too linear; you only move from point A to point B, the cutscenes are awesome but all you do in game is take turns whacking each other with stupid looking weapons, and for some reason you can only battle enemies by walking around like an idiot until the screen cracks and you're teleported to a random dimension where you fight monsters. I'm not kidding. Seriously, this game blows."

This would not. It is too full of your opinions that I do not care about.
My point exactly. This is the way a lot of the reviewers I dislike describe games like this.
You can say you hate a game or genre and have a bias but you should focus on saying what contributes to this, rather than focusing on your opinions and biases. That is what I mean about reviews. :) A positive review that only gushes about stuff is just as bad!
I'm agreeing with you on this. Biased reviews aren't inherently bad (okay, I'm directly contradicting myself from before but whatever), but what I was saying is that fans of a genre will usually overlook its inherent flaws that biased reviewers won't be able to look over. I'm mainly talking about reviews that have number scores.

Crappy opinion, 2/10 and that's generous.
