I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
Now I want to conceive of some non-Hasbro-based game shows for The Hub
I'd thought about bringing back Win, Lose or Draw (which I inherited from Disney) or The Hollywood Squares (which is owned by MGM) but those aren't original ideas of mine
What bothers me is that if you hate several genres and games that are almost universally liked, then you're probably not a very good critic. I have no doubt in my mind he's funny, but I can't take him seriously as a critic.
No, he probably doesn't count as a serious critic. He's also deliberately really negative. i remember people complained that it wasn't funny when he said nice things about Psychonauts, so since then he's been more caustic.
From what I remember (about a year and a half ago)...
There's not much to like or dislike. It's basically a bunch of snide comments, rudeness, sarcasm, swearing, and hyperbole, rather than any sort of actual thought about the inner workings and structure of games, entertainment, etc.
The same applies to the Angry Video Game Nerd, except with more swearing and hyperbole and less sarcasm and snide comments. Neither one really has any meaning or context other than farce and humorous reactions.
Look, if you just swear at a video game instead of explaining what mechanic it is that needs to be removed or improved, you don't help anyone. It is much more useful to make a reasoned, thought-out overview of the underlying flaws of a game than to simply say how terribly bad it is.
The same applies to a lot of reviewers and basically all I remember of TGWTG from the days when I used to watch TGWTG videos.
I'd say the AVGN is more reasonable because he reviews unarguably bad games, and TGWTG is more reasonable since none of the reviewers act like their opinion is fact. They regularly make a point of saying lthat they don't think liking the stuff they review makes me stupid. Now, I don't know about Yahtzee, but he seems somewhat Armond White-esque.
I don't know. Last time I watched an AVGN video was, I think, the middle of 2011. Other than hyperbole and obscenity, I remember the AVGN sometimes saying that a game has bad graphics or is too hard, but I don't remember any serious thought about the games.
Then again, I'm probably not the most reliable authority on this.
It's ok to hate a genre and review games in it, otherwise you are consigning a genre to being all bad and the same thing all the time. If a person hates a genre there is probably a reason why. Also, good reviews that gush over a game's greatness are rare, if they exist. A good review describes what a game is all about, its fun aspects, its not-so-fun aspects, and some of its highlights.
But the problem is that if you review a genre you hate, you alienate part of your audience who do like that genre and provide no real information to the other part who don't.
I don't know if I've mentioned this before, but the bottom two reviews of Skyward Sword on Metacritic have "it's too similar" and "it's too different" as their main criticisms.
