last time i checked, nobody cared what gender i was in a comic shop or anywhere nerd related.
I think this highlights something I mentioned as a flaw with his anecdote, is that his girl friend knew nothing about comics and made that apparent almost immediately.
While comic and gaming shops usually are full of people with not so great social skills or experience, I'd imagine females who are actually familiar with the culture and participate would fare a lot better.
Not to say the wouldn't have different experiences or would never have to deal with being ogled, but they'll certainly have more positive experiences then someone who walks into a comic shop and makes it clear she's out of her element.

You probably have different experiences going to gaming and comic stores than this girl since I'm guessing you actually have something in common with the people who attend, while this other girl did not.
I was just highlighting that while the author claims her experience was just because she was a woman, I'm pointing out that it was partially because she was a woman, but also because she was out of her element and also decided she should say something a tad negative about the comics.
While the person who talked back to her was clearly a bit sexist, he probably also felt a bit defensive because of the way she acted.
