i thought that stereotype had largely been supplanted by binge-drinking football hooligans, and also wizards.
Yeah, that stereotype is still lingering here. Any mention of Britain to many Americans and they'll start hearing the opening theme to Masterpiece Theater in the back of their minds.

It's perfect size for a college student or bachelor life but for a family like yours it's much too small. It can handle like two days worth of clothes per load from what I understand

Most Americans I know call lollies "suckers" most of the time, or "lollipop"...not usually just "lolly".
I don't know why these little differences fascinate me as much as they do.

Amusingly, we call them lollies in my house because my brother picked up the term from Kipper the Dog, who he loved as a child

We still get a lot of places named "Centre" here, simply because it sounds classier.
Also, CA, about that auto-flagger thing: VDOT's been doing something similar on projects that are in relatively remote areas and require having a road reduced to one lane during off-hours. There was a bridge replacement project not far from my old house in Palmyra that required this sort of getup; this was well over 20 years ago, and that thing didn't exist, so they strung up actual traffic lights.

I never really understood this stereotype, even as a kid. Then again, the fact that a family that moved from Liverpool lived down the street from us when I was growing up might have something to do with that. They were good people. I remember sneaking down to the basement to listen Iron Maiden and play to Mortal Kombat 3 with Nigel.

@Lee: I think regular traffic lights are still the preferred method for things like that, where it has to be controlled at all hours. The automatic flaggers, despite the name, are manually controlled with a remote, so they're only really helpful in the very short-term situations where you have people on the site the whole time anyway.
"whom" isn't considered nearly as pretentious as "whilst" is
i mostly stopped using 'whilst' when i found out people thought it was pretentious, but i was never really conscious of using it.
i actually find it really difficult to control what words i use, does anyone else find that? Particularly aloud, i don't think i'd be able to hold a conversation if i had to think about what words i was going to use to say it with beforehand.

Do we have to refer to SA as the guys who made fun of my poetry? i brought this on myself, i realize, but still...
I only meant it in a way that people who use antiquated, corny verbiage in everyday conversation really have no business criticizing other people's poetry

To me, 'truck' definitely sounds better, but seems potentially more ambiguous.

i dunno, i mean, a lorry's a lorry, obviously, but a lorry is a truck. Both kinda fit.
Unless you're Australian where it's still candy, but different candy, iirc.
Confession: i get self-conscious about saying 'whom' because i worry people will think it's pretentious.

Did you guys get the 'KEEP CALM AND CARRY ON' posters, or was that just a Brit thing?

I've only seen parodies/meme variations of those posters.
i do sometimes see snobby posts praising Brit music and comedy television, now that i think about it.
Huh, that's amusing, considering Nigel was the opposite of posh.

i only see these when people are imitating Shakespeare for a joke.
Sometimes.
