It's the chemistry of the plastic for some of the parts, it yellows as direct sunlight hits it. This afflicts mostly the first-run series of the console. The most intriguing thing about these first-runs, to me at least, is this:
This is the sound chipset from my Super Nintendo. Completely fucking detachable, like those old wavetable daughterboards. Folks have figured how to set these up to wire into your computer and you can use the original hardware to play back those SPC files which I think is cool as all hell.
