I know absolutely nothing about programming. I am a failure as a stereotypical autismal spergdude.
I would like to understand programming but attempting to teach myself Python (an easy language, allegedly) felt rather like banging my head against a brick wall, and then other things took up my time.
I like the idea of starting from scratch though. It seems like GameMaker already has way too much stuff on it already, and RPG Maker is too limiting. I don't know anything about Unity, though, so I might want to try that.

Ask anyone who works with C and they'll tell you there's only one good, intuitive book that teaches you how to use C and that's Kernighan and Ritchie's book on ANSI C. These were the guys who came up with the language, by the way.

Python is the beginner language here at my university, but I went to a junior college first that focused on C (which I already knew) so I know exactly zip when it comes to Python
I've heard that the C family is an absolute nightmare to be the first language to learn.
It has a bit of a curve but if a borderline illiterate Marine can learn it, so can you.
How easily can C be used for graphics? I actually got a C++ manual a year ago, but three pages in it said that it wouldn't be teaching how to make graphics so I sort of gave up on that.

That depends entirely on the graphics library you use. But you're trying to run before you can walk. You need at least a basic grasp on how C or C++ works before you start trying to figure out how to install a graphics library with your compiler and fiddling with basic primitives.
