when you're asked to pick an install location, SMBX's default is at the very "top" of the computer (as in, the default location is "C:\SMBX") and I'm pretty sure that programs really aren't supposed to do that.
Now, it is true that SMBX is, unfortunately, riddled with glitches. Its creator gave up on it before really getting it into an ideal form. But, it should work well enough that you can at least play the damn thing.
You should have a .zip of Black Candles and an .exe installer for SMBX. The first thing to do is install SMBX, but make sure you know where the directory is. Any directory is fine, I think. When you finish with the installer do you get a .zip or a regular folder?

Strictly speaking, Microsoft's official position is that program files belong only in, erm, "C:\Program Files\", but there's no reason that it shouldn't work if it's installed simply in C:\SMBX\

there are actually two Program Files areas on my setup. One for official Microsoft products and one for everything else.
Computer came like that, and I'm not sure if it's intentional or not.
Anyway if you don't have an uncompressed folder then you need to extract the contents of the .zip (right-click and choose "Extract All." All of the files should then be installed in an uncompressed folder.
it's giving me an error for what I assume is every single file in the .zip folder. That is to say, when I hit "OK" or "Cancel" another one pops up, and when I hit "OK" or "Cancel" on that one another pops up, and so on and so forth.

Weird, I've never heard of anything like that before.
Closest thing I've seen is that some 64-bit versions of Windows split it into "Program Files" and "Program Files (x86)", though I was never sure what the point of keeping the two separate was.
If your computer refuses to extract a .zip archive into a folder, then there is a bigger problem. :/
I don't have this problem with every .zip file, and in fact, this is only the second or third time I've ever seen it. I'm not stupid, the thing's just not working.

Ok, I have a hunch.
"Program Files" and "Program Files (x86)" have special file permissions to keep rogue programs from screwing things up. Try running JZip as administrator and seeing if it copies them that way.

>implying running things as an Administrator ever changes anything on a Windows.
Ok now you extract Black Candles in a similar fashion and place the uncompressed folder into the folder called "worlds" in your SMBX folder. Then you are ready to play!

Confession: I'm still on 32-bit Windows.
I got the 32-bit version with this computer four years ago (when 64-bit apps and drivers were still iffy) and I never bothered to change because it does everything I need it to do.

I don't even know what the difference between 32 and 64 bit Windows is.
Remember back in the 50s when they'd record like Elvis singing YOU AIN'T NOTHIN BUT A HOUND DOG and then they'd turn the record over and reverse it and it was all NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP and people were all like, "That is actually the voice of Satan coming from that song."

how is that my problem? That's just what's in the Black Candles .zip folder.
I thought maybe I could extract it to the folder that the SMBX .exe is in and it would work but I'll never know because it won't extract.
*sigh*
Fine, I'll try one more time. Let me uninstall SMBX though because I think I might've somehow installed it incorrectly.
okay I think I've found problem number 1.

Also, I have mine unzipped into C:\SMBX and it's fine, so...
okay yeah I think the installing it in the wrong place was the problem.
I have no idea how Imi's and all of yours are working if you have it at a C: location since I think that's a designation for disk drives, but w.e

nope. Still getting those "cannot create" errors.
I'll upload a screenshot so you know what I mean.

doing it manually tends to give me more problems though, not less.
