  • Kex, why have you done this

Why have you brought the thing that is the SA Tvtropes thread to the humble military-grade bunker known as the Heapers' Hangout.

No one needs to see that, man. And now, I'm compelled to comment on it.

    -----

They're right, on occasion. Pretty much everything they said about Fast Eddie is true. And their view of the basic problems of TvTropes, as Imi said earlier, is pretty much spot on. I can't speak for their descriptions of individual tropers, with the exception of Aon (I'm going to go out on a limb and say that she's not a pedophile) and the well-known troublemakers (Savage Heathen, Chagen, etc.). But, I can't say that they're wrong because I honestly don't know. I never delved into the lives of any of the listed tropers; I just goofed off with them. You can goof off with people for years without knowing who they really are. 'S what happened with Shichi.

But they're wrong. They're wrong because, for the most part, they can't find anything better to do than jeer. They're wrong because they treat tropers like the Greeks treated foreigners: as mindless barbarians who can never reach their own levels of greatness. They're wrong because they speak and act with more vitriol than truth.

Let's take a look at what SA would be like if they had a positive goal. I was a part of Beyond the Lampshade before it became a regular splinter forum (along with IJBM and this glorious site). The site began as a movement to analyze the problems of the site, particularly the problem with the loli anime that occurred about a year ago. While it eventually degraded to the state of the SA thread (to the point that they nearly got in trouble with the service provider for attacking people), it began as a shining beacon of hope in the negativity that surrounded Tvtropes at the time. I stuck with the site for a while, long after it stopped critiquing and started bashing, because it gave me hope. Discussion on neutral ground, not controlled by TvTropes or SA, could open up some discussion on the site. We could convince the administration to change things. But, well, almost everyone knows how that turned out. The site was given a cursory overhaul (primarily to get rid of the pedophiliac elements), I became disillusioned and I eventually moved here. But at least BTL had hope. I wasn't crushed under a ton of negativity as soon as I entered the site.

In conclusion (largely because screw this I'm tired), here's a thing that a goon wrote. It's a pretty decent analysis of why poetry written by young people is terrible. It also goes out of its way to insult a number of  tropers-turned-poets, two of whom are on this forum, and it generally treats Tvtropes' entire audience as a bunch of pretentious teenagers who are too lazy to actually understand poetry. It has a number of good points, points that could help a number of tropers delving into poetry, but Lord knows this won't show up on Tvtropes while Fast Eddie has a say about it. Hostility with wisdom's going to be treated as hostility, and people react more to a kick in the nuts than a kiss on the cheek.

    No it doesn't.

I am tired of every ex-troper ex-goon ex-whatever having an opinion on a site none of us even visit anymore, and I am increasingly convinced I may need to find somewhere that never had anything to do with TVTropes if I am to actually leave this silliness behind.

  • Denial will not get us anywhere. I'm just convinced lately that while a lot of us came here, most of us never really moved on, which is something I've been trying to do.

Remember back in the 50s when they'd record like Elvis singing YOU AIN'T NOTHIN BUT A HOUND DOG and then they'd turn the record over and reverse it and it was all NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP and people were all like, "That is actually the voice of Satan coming from that song."
Hi, Naney. Is your new keyboard working pretty well?
  • It is wonderful and good and wholesome
  • god this Caretaker album is actually really good.

why does pitchfork review awesome things sometimes

  • Smoke me a kipper, I'll be back for breakfast
    hey
  • oh god why is there so much channelfuckery on track seven

    aaugh my ears

  • My dreams exceed my real life
It is snowing like crazy outside.
  • Odradek you live near Lancaster right?

Shit, that means it's probably gonna be snowing up here by the time I have to go to work. :/

    No, near Pittsburgh.
  • Hmm, sorry. I might be thinking of Mr. W.
  • image Wee yea erra chs hymmnos mea.
America has too many Lancasters. You should have at least called them New Lancaster. :|

I only know of the one in PA, and even that is famous mostly for being very Amish and having a pretzel factory.

There are tons of repeats in American city names. For example, Georgia has a Columbus, an Albany, an Augusta, and I'm sure that's not the only Brunswick.
  • There used to be a town near here called Lower Starr, but I think it got incorporated into another township or something, because it doesn't exist on Google Maps anymore and the sign was gone the last time I drove near there.
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
Lancaster is indeed an Amishy place.

I am also near Pittsburgh and it is indeed snowing. Me not like.
  • My dreams exceed my real life
This is the difference between us. I like snow.
  • other tiny towns with weird names: Blue Ball, Burning Well, Bird-in-Hand, Intercourse, Effort, Results, those last two are near each other.

there's also the trio of Neff's Station, Laury's Station, and Neffs-Laurys. I think there're about six buildings total between them, but they're all allegedly different places.

  • Touch the cow. Do it now.

Do you drive a vehicle the accumulated snow and ice upon which you must remove? This is my objection.
  • My dreams exceed my real life
Snow is one of the pleasures reserved for those who don't drive.
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
    Verily.

Speaking as someone who doesn't drive but has spent almost their entire life in a very warm climate and has the temperature preferences of a mutant space reptile, snow is pretty to look at and to go out in for a little bit sometimes. But then it gets cold and wet, and you realize that you much prefer the dry, centrally heated indoors.

I know. :D A permanent fixture in the rules, a guideline: "Please do not discuss TV Tropes drama here, because this place has nothing to do with it anymore."

Frankly, I'm surprised that it's not against the rules. Figured that  it was put into the rules after the thread for talking about Tvtropes was locked.

And no, I guess I haven't moved on. The site was a home for me once, and I can't get over what happened to it.

And I did something stupid by writing  a mini-essay on a closed thread. I could blame it on other factors -- it was 5 in the morning, I'd stopped thinking rationally, I was just in the mood to write, I was still wound up from the last time this kind of thing got mentioned -- but it's probably because I'm attracted to this kind of thing. Finding something wrong on the internet causes me to ruminate about it until I jot down a response.

We're probably not going to stop talking about Tvtropes, as a forum. I know you'd prefer cutting ties with it, but Tvtropes is still our place of origin, and our egress from it doesn't change that. Heck, I still visit it on occasion, and I know of at least one other person who does. But, you're right. There's no need to be bringing up Tvtropes drama here, particularly of the defunct sort. At the very least, that kind of mess should be wiped off of the main thread. The Hangout is no longer a part of the site; nothing we say here will be able to change Tvtropes's past or shape its future. As such, I'll do my best to keep any commentary on Tvtropes off of the main thread from now on.

tl;dr, I was being stupid and overly emotional and I'll stop now. Sorry.

The real Lancaster isn't much better :p
  • Looking at clothing, I did not realize that It's Happy Bunny was still even a thing. Like, at all.
  • A supposed cute little bunny who says asshole things. Kinda of a logo thing since there's a bazillion products with it plastered all over. It was really popular when I was in middle school and part of high school.

    image
  • oh that thing.

Yeah that's been popular for forever.

Oh! I remember those too. I just didn't realize that's what they were called.
