...in what time period is this supposed to take place?
  • Just skimmed all of coffee_dad.

That was much sadder than it should have been.

Kexruct, that thread's been closed for months...
  • ...and?

I really hate reading these guys criticize people who I considered my acquaintances at least, but I feel obligated to continue reading to prove to myself that the goons are just as bad as I thought they were.

There is one paragraph in there I agree with.
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
First, its claims that “there is no such thing with notability,” combined with being an open wiki to the entire internet, mean that it is bloated with bullshit. Its sections on real literature and actual art are stunted little nubs, while its anime sections are as swollen and overfull as an infected cyst and its page on My Little Pony is literally a contender for the longest novel in the world. It actively discourages analysis, deep discussion, the criticism of any works valued by the contributors, and has pages on troper-written fanfiction, pornographic comics about surprise sex and murder, and child pornography.
    Fire away

I don't necessarily disagree with that, but when you get a bunch of teenagers together and tell them "this is a website for stuff you like, GO NUTS" what areas do you expect them to flock to?

Also, there's the fact that literature inherently has fewer tropes than any other medium.

    "a bunch of teenagers"
    "
    a bunch of teenagers"
    "
    a bunch of teenagers"

    maybe there's the problem

Exactly. They'll grow out of it.

But see, this is the part that bothers me. When I found TvTropes, you know what? I was happy. I had always felt, for the most part, isolated until I realized that there are people out there who are just as big of a nerd as I am. Sure, tropers aren't perfect. They're teenagers, what do you expect? They're silly, immature, and (honestly, the worst part of the site) occasionally faux-intellectual. But the only difference is that when they say stupid stuff, it's online and anyone can see it. Would anyone be talking about them this way if they were just nerds clustered in a corner of a cafeteria?

    ugh that was really stupid.

Bottom line: I like them. They're my friends. And when everyone is always saying mean stuff about them, I get upset.
  • related: I'm now reading the SA posts in the voice of a stereotypical teenaged mean girl. YNTKT

I have to agree with Kex a little on his bottom line, since I kinda feel that way when people talk about TVT like that (especially on Tumblr), since I know quite a few of these people.
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
    Everybody thinks they're a poet
  • Actually, reading the posts in that voice is very natural.

Who woulda thunk it. Something Awful is basically equivalent to the pahpuhler girls' table.

I don't care much, although I don't remember it being as bad as that thread makes it out to be. Maybe I avoided the really bad sections

Also why do any of us care about that wiki anymore? It is literally months and months and months in our past.

    I still go there occasionally.

  • Little late, but I hope everyone had a merry Christmas and have been enjoying the holidays.

Also, it's raining here and has been all day. As much as I like the rain, I'm kinda  bummed that it's raining on Christmas (well, was raining on Christmas and has continued on into the next day).

If you're pressed for time, you may substitute this one.

I got this album for Christmas. I've had it on repeat for most of the day.
