In part to allow the actual management to do their own thing (CBS's Les Moonves and MTV Networks's Tom Freston did not get along), to allow each company to play to its own strengths, and to offer different options for shareholders (e.g. CBS can be expected to pay a dividend, while Viacom can't).

There were things about that split that made little sense to me (e.g. letting CBS keep Showtime and Paramount Television and, with that having happened, Viacom taking TV Land with them)...
