And I think my biggest issue with a lot of social justice is the fact that oftentimes it comes off as intolerant to simply assume things about a person because they're white or rich or whatever. It's fighting fire with fire.

See, this is exactly what I'm talking about. I don't want to discuss the actual politics of the comics, because frankly, I think y'all already know that I'm extremely liberal and there's not much to say.
What I want to discuss is how incompetent many cartoonists are act actually conveying those political messages in a way that makes sense.

We've been talking about the mail vs iPhone photo for many posts and I STILL don't understand it.
No. That doesn't deserve any comment. Asay just wants to elicit a bad reaction to prove how stupid and easily offended liberals are. Don't take the bait.

Guns keep the Vikings at bay.
If we outlawed guns, Norway is going to load up the long boats and our navy will be powerless to stop them because of gun control, you see, and all those Norsemen will raid and pillage America with their swords, spears, and axes.
Someone should let Norway know that the Vikings never wore horns.
The dental issues of Louis XIII, the mating cycles of Earwigs, the sexually transmitted diseases of dogs, the buildup of moss on mount Kilimanjaro, the existence of Flesh-eating-worms, medieval medical quackery, and the relative attractiveness of the mistresses of Charles II; all of those are better subjects than politics.
You can talk about politics in loads of places on the internet. This is the only place where I can have Imipolex rank the wives of Henry VIII in terms of attractiveness.

The problem, although this has nothing to do with silly political cartoons, is that even if you don't care about politics you can still be affected by it.
Not so much by the relative attractiveness of Charles II's mistresses.

One thing I've noticed about Chuck Asay is that he tends to preach to the choir, even more so than other cartoonists:
This comic only makes any kind of point at all if you already agree with his assumption that happy gay couples and insurance coverage for birth control aren't "moral".

George Bush and the Elephant somehow created jobs (In some hypothetical universe where the job market actually improved during his presidency, I guess?), but the media only cares about reporting about "OH SHIT, WE'RE DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMED!" events. So no one is giving George Bush and the Elephant any credit in hypothetical universe land...

I had to read it like three times, but I think what he's trying to say is "The media only cares about the Abu Ghraib abuse because it distracts from the fact that Republicans made jobs!"
Look, the mating patterns of Earwigs are important. Most Earwigs in North America are non-native, being introduced in the early twentieth century. Omnivorous invasive species, yo.
And people keep introducing more invasive species to get rid of them. Just look at Triarthria setipennis, which is found on continents it has absolutely no business being.
Look, this is relevant to crops and food production. The ways that people disrupt Earwig mating patterns have a huge effect on food production. It's more significant and has more of an impact on my life than politics.

You live in a country, politics impacts on everything in your life

Babar the Elephant is Republican. Who'd have guessed?
@ Aliroz: I agree that invasive species are potentially very harmful. You'll notice that of all the things you listed, I didn't single out ecology as being less important than politics.
Nevertheless, political issues such as war, discrimination and economic failure do directly and adversely impact the lives of billions of people, and it's not at all unreasonable to care about them.

I gotta run but I'll just leave this here before I go:
It's your pretty typical "holiday + political meme of the moment" cartoon, but McKee completely missed the point of the Thanksgiving story. They really didn't build that, that's why they're giving thanks!
My father grew up on a cattle ranch that is still owned and run by his family. Just outside my front yard, our neighbors have a rather large field that rotates between alfalfa, barley, and corn. The vegetables that my family eats, we grow in our back yard. The peaches, apples, raspberries, strawberries, and cherries come from the front yard. My home valley was agrarian just a generation ago.
You've never had to protect the year's carrots from the Carrot Fly(not an earwig, I know); you never had to protect the Peaches from the goshadarn European Earwig, which was also eating the apples, strawberries, and raspberries; you've never lived this life, so you don't know.
Earwigs are completely important, and you can't tell me that they ain't.

Clay Bennet's cartoons are probably up your street then.

You people still care about that soap?

Although the whole "you didn't build that" meme was kind of a missed point to begin with, or rather a point ignored for the sake of a cheap laugh.

Well, I just screwed up there.
Sorry.
