On a lighter note, after trying the default Ubuntu desktop I've decided it's not for me. I don't know if I hate it as much as I once did, but I prefer my XFCE for the same reasons I prefer Windows 7 to Windows 8.
Also, Chrome's built-in Flash Player is the only one still being actively developed for Linux, but it's so slow and bloated and crashy that I had to disable in favor of the 11.2 version I have installed. -_-
Honestly, I'm less like "OMG GUNS" and more "We need to find out why people are snapping like this". Sure, there's always going to be a percentage of people that do, but two high-profile shootings in a week is scary.

It isn't because I think guns are good or that people should have them; it is because it is just impossible to prevent someone who wants a gun from getting one, and because there are so many bad people in the world who have guns, and will still have guns even if they are banned.
I keep seeing this argument, but even aside from the politics I'm not sure I understand the logic behind it.
There are people who rob banks even though robbing banks is illegal. Does that mean it's pointless to have a law against robbing banks?

I have too.
Crap, are we actually getting to the point where we're outgrowing the basic plan? >_>

The Académie française prefers that French speakers do not incorporate English words like brunch into their language, and suggests using the phrase le grand petit déjeuner,[10] "big breakfast" (literally "the big little lunch"). Despite the wishes of the Académie, the typical French person readily says "brunch."
honestly Ace it's weird how many things you think you know about the United States considering you don't live here. Don't believe everything you hear, man.

Well, there are legit reasons to have guns.
But there are no legit reasons to rob banks.
I think you're kinda missing my point, though.
I'm looking at a specific argument, namely this idea that banning guns would be pointless because anyone determined to do harm would simply disobey the law.
What I'm saying is that this line of reasoning could be applied to nearly every single law in existence.

Not really. because this line of reasoning could only really apply to things that have the potential to cause unlawful harm, but most of the time do not.
The idea isn't people would disobey the law so there's no point in the law, the idea is simply that perhaps we should look at the underlying causes of this kind of thing too, instead of just banning the weapon.

And again, this is a distinctly different argument from the one I'm addressing.
How is it when I outright say "I'm addressing this one specific argument" I still get people throwing other arguments in there? Come on.
Doctor Who reference in Pokemon B2W2? Headcanon accepted.
CA well I think I can answer that. At most school/university campuses, they have laws about no firearms and signs posted everywhere warning you that you better not tote that Remington 700 onto school grounds. Now, over here in Texas, we have those laws on campuses as well and it's usually some shitkicker who forgot to leave his rifle at home and it's sitting in the cab of his truck. It's clear he's not any danger but oh no zero tolerance etc etc.
Now suppose the imaginary situation that you've decided the best way to make the world pay is to go shoot up the local university. Do you think that NO GUNS sign out front is going to stop you?
the vast majority of the united states is either suburban or rural.
According to the CIA factbook, the urbanization rate of the USA is 80%.
But you know, its totally wrong.
Depends on what you consider "urbanization." Here's an example that suits this conversation and what you're talking about:
My cousin and his family live on a ranch in a town of 20k people which technically qualifies it as an urban environment. He lives out on the edge of it, and the street that extends out to his house isn't paved, it's a gravel road. He and his neighbors have opposed the paving of their street for years, because according to the town's laws, you can't shoot your guns on your own property if the street you lived on is paved -- which as you can imagine, they greatly enjoy doing.
The idea isn't people would disobey the law so there's no point in the law, the idea is simply that perhaps we should look at the underlying causes of this kind of thing too, instead of just banning the weapon.

My point was that I think you are misunderstanding what they're saying.

Of course not. Nothing will once you've already got the weapon. But I'm arguing that it shouldn't be so damn easy to get weapons in the first place.
Frankly, I'm just somewhat disgusted by the people who feel that their right to go into any shop on the corner and pick up deadly weapons is worth the increased likelihood of things like this year's shootings happening.

Its crazy that in a society its easier to get guns than to get mental health treatments.
Also guns should only be allowed for those who know how to use them and how to store them safely.

My album is nearing completion, I think.
But the existing tracks require a number of tweaks and I need to make at least one or two more.
wot albumIf you have an appreciation for synthpop I will humbly recommend you the first two albums by the legendary Blue Nile.
I guess that's actually more dreampop now that I really think about it.
Well anyway, they're awesome.
But there are no legit reasons to rob banks.
But I'm sure most people in teh USA aren't rural types.
