Doctor Who reference in Pokemon B2W2? Headcanon accepted.
One of my friends suggested we institute a mental exam before we sell guns to people, like that's any sort of solution. In the military, recruits have to go through several batteries of mental exams before they're even shipped off to boot camp and while in basic training they're closely monitored for any signs of trouble -- I lost a few from my platoon because of this. Even under this extensive scrutiny, we still had troops lose their fucking minds and engage in crimes or atrocity.
Even then, having people tested would be better than nothing.
And besides, there's also the fact that no one needs assault weapons. They're useless for shooting sports, you don't kill deer with Uzis, and you can just use a handgun for self defense.

when you weigh the amount of people who own a gun and never commit such crimes, no, it's not. It'd be a tremendous waste that would be better put elsewhere.

I don't even know if Uzis are legal in America.
Also, you can argue the fact that nobody needs an assault weapon, but personally I don't want anyone telling me that I can't have one. I live in a city of 220,000 people where not only can you walk into a gunshop and 10 minutes later walk out with an AK-47 or an AR-15 (M16) or even a few vintage fully auto weapons like a Tommy Gun (actually this would take longer than 10 minutes but they're for sale to the public) and somehow, people aren't dying every day from these assault weapons from being so ubiquitous.
This year we had, as far as I know, 3 nuts show up with assault weapons to kill people and now it's being argued that the hundreds of thousands of us who do own assault weapons and don't engage in such murderous behavior should be punished for it. No, I don't think so.
Sorry, I don't recognize silly little trump plays like this.
Then allow me to explain what I meant. How much does being legally allowed to have assault weapons improve your life? Surely this doesn't outweigh the loss of hundreds of lives our lax gun laws have allowed.

This is a fair question.
It doesn't. Same as how having a high-powered sports car doesn't improve someone's life, but people end up dead and mangled by those things anyway. Same as how skiing doesn't improve someone's life, but people end up dead and mangled by slamming into trees or going over cliffs. Same as alcohol .... you see where this is going.
Now let me ask you a question: What do you know about about assault weapons, other than their scary name?

Here's the problem with that. Sports cars are just flashy versions of cars, which are tools. Assault weapons are just that, weapons. They aren't tools. They are designed for one thing, and one thing only: to harm. Skiing is a sport. It doesn't cause deaths in the same way as guns do. Alcohol, well, that's a fair point, but I don't particularly approve of alcohol anyway.

Hahahahaha! Way to call my bluff, Forsythe. And I'm being sincere, by the way. Honestly? I don't know much. I'd be interested to learn more, but I'm only fifteen and I can't exactly buy an AK-47 to learn about it.
Kexruct is saying that "not everyone who buys a gun will kill someone with it" is not a valid counterpoint.
In this particular case, it's sort of irrelevant, because as I recall, the killer didn't actually own the gun he went on his rampage with (I believe it was his parents' weapon).
On the other hand.
People need to realize that simply being a part of "gun culture" (and I use the term loosely) is going to put them under a watchful eye from people who aren't. This crosses political boundaries, my mother is a staunch conservative and hates guns to the extent that she argued with my uncle when he wanted to buy a hunting rifle (long story). Guns mean different things to different people, and that's why this debate is so hard to have.
They don't like crash into 20-odd elementary school kids then die.
and what prevents that from happening?
Aside from that, look at a Porsche or Ferrari. Those things are not built to toot around at 55mph, but they're legal to sell anyway. That's my whole point.
And some douchebags won't shut up about the race of the shooter. It's not about race. NOT EVERYTHING IS ABOUT RACE
Actually, if you're talking about the people saying there'd be more of an outrage in general if the shooter wasn't Caucasian, they're sadly probably right.
You are the end result of a “would you push the button” prompt where the prompt was “you have unlimited godlike powers but you appear to all and sundry to be an impetuous child” – Zero, 2022
Honestly, I was kinda on the fence about gun control until I realized that we've had 3 big shootings this year and in all three cases, the weapons were purchased legally.
Does that mean that if they weren't purchased legally, the shootings wouldn't have happened? Of course not. But it stands to reason that if you make guns harder to get, fewer people will have the opportunity to do harm with them.

I don't know if that's what you mean though.
I was saying that people are saying that it has to do with white privilege or whatnot.
To me it seems kinda silly to go on about how terrible BIG SCARY GUNS are when someone who knows what they're doing with it could kill you just as easily with like a normal one

Honestly, I'm less like "OMG GUNS" and more "We need to find out why people are snapping like this". Sure, there's always going to be a percentage of people that do, but two high-profile shootings in a week is scary.

A semiautomatic assault rifle is a weapon that rechambers another round after firing one off, much like a handgun or a revolver. That gives them a faster rate of fire than a typical bolt-action or lever-action rifle. The two most common in the world, I'd think, are the AK-47 and M16 (it could be the SKS though.)

alternatively:
Unless you're drunk driving (*Or drunk skiing I guess*), but that is already illegal.
