@Anonus: The impression you've given me of Aurora, through various photos, anecdotes, etc. that you've shared, is that it's the kind of suburb that exists in a lot of American cities. At the very least, it seems somewhat reminiscent of suburbs I know of here, so I assume that's pretty typical of most big American cities.

Somewhat related, a friend of mine on FB just posted that he's at the movie theater. I told him to turn off his fucking phone

@ Corporal Forsythe: To me, you really don't seem very similar to George Carlin, who (I assume) played up his opinionatedness for the sake of comedy.  To my mind, there is a difference between being assured, and being closed-minded and stubborn, in that the latter will never budge on an issue even if their stance is proven to contradict both reason and their values, and only reluctantly if it's proven to contradict reality.

Having a set of core values and standing by them is something I greatly respect.  Having a set of preconceived notions about reality and other people, and presuming any challenges to them to be arrant nonsense, is something that I find irritating at best and frightening at worst.  You can't trust somebody like that, because the moment you spot a flaw in their logic it's impossible to maintain any kind of honest relationship with them.

This is also one reason I dislike Richard Dawkins so much, incidentally.

That's also why I dislike Rick Santorum. Everyone was all "well at least he's not a flip flopper like Romney" and I was all "yes but Romney also isn't a bigot"
  • I never said he isn't an insensitive moron, mind you.

Romney is a weaselly, amoral prick, but to be perfectly honest, I would probably vote for him in a hypothetical scenario in which doing so was my best hope at preventing Rick Santorum being elected.

You know, in between writing angry letters about how dreadful both parties were, and making dramatic posts on the Internet about my obviously ineffectual plans to emigrate to Canada.

Yes, if we put our minds to it, and concentrate our resources, we can become something better than human, something greater.

    We can become... transhumanists.

I'm certainly not advocating taking up an inarguable stance on anything, but I think it's only fair to stop and consider why a person is being so bull-headed on an issue. This isn't always a flaw.  As for the preconceived notion,  I can only hope I have the humility to at least analyze such a thing whenever called out on it.

I think that the reason Dawkins gets so much flak is simply because he's an asshole. That's the thing though, him being a dick (no pun intended) doesn't diminish his argument in the least. It just means he's a dick. I certainly wouldn't want to sit next to him on a plane flight, but that doesn't mean I discount what he has to say -- especially myself being a Christian.

This post is good and you should feel good.

Of course, that is not to rag on Corporal Forsythe either. Having principles seems really important to me too, but I think being willing to admit you may be wrong in certain situations and being charitable when you realize you are right in others is a good quality to have. I could be wrong, but I also feel like being a good listener and behaving well regardless of whether other people are right or wrong go hand-in-hand.
  • But the thing is what Dawkins' arguments are either based on giant strawmen or were pulled apart by various philosophers and theologists ages ago. And when someone points this out to him he's all "LAWL NO"

dude have you read his books

he doesn't use science to debunk religion, he goes around either spouting various philosophical arguments against the existence of the christian god that have had solid counterarguments for ages that he completely ignores, stuff roughly along the lines of that JEWISH ZOMBIE copypasta, or simply says CHILD MOLESTING PRIESTS RELIGION IS BAD THEREFORE IS NO GOD

    Thanks, Louie! :)

I agree with your point about the importance of listening to others, as well.

Oh yes, agreed.  And don't get me wrong, I think that's the best way to approach the arguments of bull-headed individuals, and you certainly don't seem to me like somebody unwilling to listen to reason or respect opposing arguments.

Naney's right about Dawkins, though.  If the problem were merely that he's an asshole I'd respect him a lot more than I do. Of course theologians are going to oppose him (and Dawkins is quite willing to accept support from philosophers who side with him, e.g. Daniel Dennett), but Dawkins simply refuses to address deeper theological questions on the presumption that their foundations aren't worth respecting, and I think that's wrong.

On a similar but not-really-related note: I find it kinda weird, thinking about it now, how I throw "fuck" and "fucking" around all the time but save "fuck you" for when I'm morally outraged.

Then I think the reason I don't have a problem with his argument is like him I don't have the patience to delve into theology myself, outside of reading the Bible. I have no use for any of the intellectual byproducts of the Christian religion, in fact I can't tolerate them. If you were to challenge me with one of the many atheist gambits about God, such as playing the logic card, I'll simply tell you that God is illogical. This isn't a denial of his existence nor is it some glaring fallacy in regards to my faith. It's something I simply accept, along with the fact that he gave us this world to live on and brains in our heads to use which is a fine explanation as to why we have to fix our own screw-ups on earth without him flying down every 5 minutes to fix our rampant idiocy.
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
@ Corporal Forsythe: That's fine.  For me, my faith is something that is often tested, and that I feel should be subject to reasoned criticism, same as every belief I hold.  But Dawkins styles himself as this great spokesman for science, reason and good sense, and I think that somebody in that position ought to treat his intellectual opposition with the respect their arguments warrant, rather than brush them aside in order to push a popular agenda.

Oh yeah, one day she was handing back our exams and calling out names as well as anyone whose second language is english.   She kept mispronouncing most names and then she got to one exam and jokingly said, "finally, a name I can pronounce. Mohammed."

I was laughing right there but the next name that came up for her to call out was Jesus, but she didn't realize that it was the Spanish pronunciation. I can't remember the last time I busted up laughing so hard.
