Why is "Evil King Bowser Here" such an earworm

It's only a little METAL compared to some of Bowser's other themes and suggests a tantrum-prone manchild

I saw enough "mic" vs. "mike" arguments back when I used to read grammar blogs that I kinda just gave up on trying to use one or the other

You used to read grammar blogs?

    Why does this surprise me?

All I know is that it's always "mic" in the music industry.

I don't know why that's a thing, but hey, whatever.

  • A ridiculous brag rap.

work all of this into a rap somehow:

3A. IN ORDER FOR THE ADMISSIONS STAFF OF OUR COLLEGE TO GET TO KNOW YOU, THE APPLICANT, BETTER, WE ASK THAT YOU ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTION: ARE THERE ANY SIGNIFICANT EXPERIENCES YOU HAVE HAD, OR ACCOMPLISHMENTS YOU HAVE REALIZED, THAT HAVE HELPED TO DEFINE YOU AS A PERSON?

I am a dynamic figure, often seen scaling walls and crushing ice. I have been known to remodel train stations on my lunch breaks, making them more efficient in the area of heat retention. I translate ethnic slurs for Cuban refugees, I write award-winning operas, I manage time efficiently.

Occasionally, I tread water for three days in a row. I woo women with my sensuous and godlike trombone playing, I can pilot bicycles up severe inclines with unflagging speed, and I cook Thirty-Minute Brownies in twenty minutes. I am an expert in stucco, a veteran in love, and an outlaw in Peru.

Using only a hoe and a large glass of water, I once single-handedly defended a small village in the Amazon Basin from a horde of ferocious army ants. I play bluegrass cello, I was scouted by the Mets, I am the subject of numerous documentaries. When I'm bored, I build large suspension bridges in my yard. I enjoy urban hang gliding. On Wednesdays, after school, I repair electrical appliances free of charge.

I am an abstract artist, a concrete analyst, and a ruthless bookie. Critics worldwide swoon over my original line of corduroy evening wear. I don't perspire. I am a private citizen, yet I receive fan mail. I have been caller number nine and have won the weekend passes. Last summer I toured New Jersey with a traveling centrifugal-force demonstration. I bat 400.

My deft floral arrangements have earned me fame in international botany circles. Children trust me. I can hurl tennis rackets at small moving objects with deadly accuracy. I once read Paradise Lost, Moby Dick, and David Copperfield in one day and still had time to refurbish an entire dining room that evening. I know the exact location of every food item in the supermarket. I have performed several covert operations with the CIA.

I sleep once a week; when I do sleep, I sleep in a chair. While on vacation in Canada, I successfully negotiated with a group of terrorists who had seized a small bakery. I balance, I weave, I dodge, I frolic, and my bills are all paid.

On weekends, to let off steam, I participate in full-contact origami. Years ago I discovered the meaning of life but forgot to write it down. I have made extraordinary four course meals using only a mouli and a toaster oven. I breed prize-winning clams. I have won bullfights in San Juan, cliff-diving competitions in Sri Lanka, and spelling bees at the Kremlin.

I have played Hamlet, I have performed open-heart surgery, and I have spoken with Elvis.

But I have not yet gone to college.

considering the caliber of student that NYU produces, that question (in all caps) is not surprising in the least.

Regarding FM sounds: I wonder what Synclavier setup they used to do the gong at the beginning of "Beat It", and if you could reproduce it on a DX7 or something else Yamaha-ish and easier to move around.

I see what Mrs. Angelini's getting at--I'm always terrified that my hard drive will die and I'll lose all my photos--but I can't help but think that, you know, it's incredibly easy to make backups of digital photos, whereas if something happens to that shoebox (flood, fire, theft) Angelini will be out of luck.

The Megadrive's chip is a YM2612 (OPN2), which is 4-operator FM with 6 voices, stereo panning and a PCM channel. You've probably heard it a lot because the Sound Blaster Pro 2.0 and Sound Blaster 16 used the YMF262 (OPL3), which is an OPN2 with more waveforms and the OPL2's 2-op mode (but no PCM channel).

And all of these chips are related to the original 2-chip OP chipset in the DX7, which was 6-operator with 32 algorithms (including a straight pipe organ setting!) and had something like 8 or 16 voices.

I always hear that one lyric in Journey's Don't stop Believing as "A singer in a smoke-kay room.  A smell of wine and sheep perfume".

What is sheep perfume?  Is it perfume for sheep, perfume that makes you smell like sheep, perfume made from sheep, perfume made by sheep, or perfume that cures sheep-scented body odor?

Also, Billy Joel's Piano man goes "Making love to his tonic engine".  What's a tonic engine?  An engine that makes tonic?  An engine that runs on tonic?  An engine made of tonic?  An engine lubricated by Tonic?
  • Recently in the Mechwarrior Online Open Beta, a guy named Drakenveld conned his way into the position of Khan of Clan Smoke Jaguar. MWO is a community warfare game and though it's still in its infancy about a third of the players were allied with CSJ back then so this was a pretty big thing. Drakenveld became Khan by claiming he'd been over in Iraq for the past several years IRL and this somehow gave him the cred to lead Cheeto-dusted hordes in simulated combat. Drakenveld went so far as to post a picture of himself in an Army uniform on his profile, sporting among other things long hair, a goatee, and medals that you could only get by being an astronaut or a general. Apparently, somehow, CSJ had bought all this. A group made up of real-life combat vets, most of them drunk as s**t and led by a player named Pierce Rossignol, saw the pic after a match against Drakenveld, at which point I can only imagine they chorus-belched WTF? and bit the necks off new beer bottles before logging into the MWO public forums and proceeding to f**k Drakenveld up. They tore down every claim of service line by line and humiliated the crap out of him, ultimately getting him stripped of his title as Khan, getting him banned from the CSJ servers, and probably ruining the chance of his war stories ever getting him laid again. It made me laugh and wince at the same time. It was surreal to see online life meeting real life. It was like seeing a uniform ripped off a traitor at the stocks. I guess the only lesson here is don't f**k with a bunch of drunk vets blowing s**t up in giant robots. But you probably all knew that already.

Not sure whether to laugh or just hit my head repeatedly against my laptop.

Speaking of that, I should sign up.
