Interesting. Apparently, almost all cheap CFL bulbs use the same doubly-fed, self-exciting flyback oscillator circuit, dumping square waves into a tuned network that the lamp itself is part of. (This is not too far divorced from how a microwave oven works, except that the frequencies and the power output are both much lower.) Nicer bulbs may include a thermistor between the lamp filaments for soft starting.
