From what I remember about the last faker you discussed here, I'd say that the number of awards that he has, along with the patches on his sleeves, would require him to serve in a dozen or so areas for a number of years each. Also, that braid's probably on the wrong side.

The braid (forraguere) is on the right side, and there's nothing too unusual about the medals... except for the placement of the purple heart up top. That's out of place, so there's one.
Roland: Nope, once upon a time (the mid-1980s), the EGA was a card of its own, too. And several companies even made "super EGA" cards that could do tricks like video-out, 400i modes on a 200p CGA monitor, and even 640x480 or 800x600 if you had a good-enough monitor.
VGA was a substantial upgrade to EGA that removed a lot of its limitations, added 256-color support and opened the door to true-color and a whole bunch of other things.

Do you have Abrash's big fat black book on everything regarding x86 graphics, too?
Oh, I wish I did. A lot of what I know about the mid-1980s graphics scene was from reading old issues of PC Magazine when I was like 10, and then from actually playing around with some of the cards in question years later, when we got some in some old surplus lots. I actually learned how to do the the "SNES fade" on the VGA from someone in my Pascal class in high school!

When Callus (the CPS-1 emulator by the guy who did Nesticle and Genecyst) came out, it used a really fucking bizarre VESA mode, something like 400x300. I guess it's entirely possible if you can do other modes like 480x350 but that's some wierd shit they figured out back there.
Yeah, playing with the hacked modes in Fractint was a pastime of mine in high school, especially seeing how they behaved on different combinations of monitor and card. I think the only monitor we ever had that got all the modes right (and that wasn't a modern DVI or TMDS panel) was an old MultiSync 2A or 3D.

the one thing that's always bugged me about those video modes was they almost always loomed around 60hz. Now that flat panels are the norm, that's no longer a problem but I remember Mode X @60hz always being sheer city.

holy shit, nothing like planning for something months ahead of time and someone in the family decides to get involved somehow and damn near wreck fucking everything. The short of it is the family wants me to visit a few days after I return from Japan, fine, but they'd have to get my plane ticket for the trip home because I couldn't afford to split up the travel costs on my student budget, especially around Christmas when they jack up the prices. One family member has one of his patented great ideas (that always end in disaster) to save everyone money and long story short I had to put my foot down and tell them no -- and now it's costing them extra because they're buying this ticket so late. If I hadn't done this I'd be taking a bus home from LA to Texas and I've done that before and I'm never doing it again.

Yeah, the hacked Fractint hi-res modes were even worse; some went as low as 50 Hz because the stock VGA's dot clock was too slow. Also, the 256-color Mode X modes used bank-switched memory, which means that the sort of "windowshading" the Windows VGA driver did was kind of inevitable.

What I find really astonishing isn’t that a giant land snail managed to earn a doctorate, but that he managed to land a national TV spot despite displaying this kind of egregious, disrespectful behaviour towards his co-host.

This was apparently in the House of Representative's cafeteria.
I didn't even know they had a cafeteria.
Oh wow,
I thought the re-naming of French fries to Freedom Fries was a joke.
People should just be grown in test tubes
Also, why do I always get cool game ideas just before I have to go to work
