Okay, the torrent is done. Looks like this 1.7GB is every fucking fan-made song and remix for MLP. I'll toss it up on my site if any of you want to grab it.
They finally stopped screwing around with the Walmart here in North Raleigh, but it still sucks compared to the one in Wake Forest and compared to the Target that's literally across the street. Walmart is cheaper and has more stuff but Target is still less of a pain.
Remember back in the 50s when they'd record like Elvis singing YOU AIN'T NOTHIN BUT A HOUND DOG and then they'd turn the record over and reverse it and it was all NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP and people were all like, "That is actually the voice of Satan coming from that song."

Vital knowledge: My Asian American Literature teacher mentioned Tim Wise yesterday and I immediately thought of Forsythe.
"I know this Marine who says he's a stupid asshole."
Yeah, don't think that would have gone over well, since the prof seems to like Wise (and my professor is half Japanese to boot, which I find a little interesting)

A whole lot of buzzword-heavy stuff about privilege but there's this:
The third white privilege that Tim Wise and other so-called white anti-racists enjoy is the privilege of being honored for their anti-racist work as their Black activist counterparts and other activists of color are denounced and derided. Case in point: Several years back I spoke at a school in Massachusetts for their annual Dr. King Day commemoration. As I spoke about King’s legacy and the ongoing struggle for racial justice, I was met with outright hostility from the students gathered in the auditorium. The following year I would be contacted by an Arab faculty member at the school. She would inform me that for that year’s King Day event, the school decided to invite Tim Wise to address the student body. She went on to inform me that Wise was received with profound admiration by the very same students that heckled me the year before.
Tim Wise is a social/civil rights activist guy. Known for talking a lot about white privilege and is white. He seems decently well liked by college faculty, since his videos/books seem to pop up a lot as study material.

He seems decently well liked by college faculty,
Of course he does
There's a reason that "ivory tower" is used to describe academics and their complete detachment from reality, and this is a prime example of that. For example, two years ago whenever the Republicans were voted back into power in Congress, he put out a statement to the effect of "oh yeah? well you guys are OLD! And are gonna die soon! Ha ha! So there!" on his blog. This is on top of his circus act of being the angry white guy who's angry at white people and also some sort of expert on African-American culture.
Then there's people like Bill Cosby who (unlike Wise) actually grew up in this culture, is able to speak from experience, and takes it upon himself to go out and speak to and educate the public on this subject -- and is completely ignored by these same ivory tower imbeciles. Hell, Cosby earned his PhD this way. But somehow clowns like Wise are afforded more credibility. It's as boggling as it is sad.
In 1976, Cosby earned a Doctor of Education (Ed.D) degree from the University of Massachusetts. For his doctoral research, he wrote a dissertation entitled, "An Integration of the Visual Media Via 'Fat Albert And The Cosby Kids' Into the Elementary School Curriculum as a Teaching Aid and Vehicle to Achieve Increased Learning".
Bill Cosby never earned a Ph.D., and it is therefore inappropriate to place "Ph.D." behind his name. The difference between a Ph.D. and an Ed.D. is significant.
Ph.D. curriculum typically emphasizes more breadth and depth in theory and research methodology than the Ed.D. Ph.D. programs typically emphasize deeper knowledge about specific topical areas, and often require twice the course work of an Ed.D, with special emphasis in research and teaching. Ed.D. programs typically emphasize less rigorous "practical interests", such as clinical work and surveys.

This study examines the failure of urban schools to meet the educational needs of minority children and explores the possibilities of using television as a tool for educational change. It discusses three television series ("Sesame Street,""The Electric Company," and "Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids") with regard to their success as teaching/learning instruments and their attempts to combat institutional racism; it then reports on an evaluation of the effectiveness of "Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids" as a teaching aid in the elementary classroom. The evaluation indicated that the series can serve as a useful addition to existing curriculum materials. (Author/GW)

Fat Albert was an awesome show, one of my favorite growing up. Cosby was able to take a group of poor kids growing up in the ghetto and made a realistic yet awesome cartoon about it.

Also, urban legend says that the scared-straight prison episode of Fat Albert was a lot more explicit and what was released on DVD a few years ago is a censored cut. I have that episode, it starts out with Cosby warning the viewer and asking that a parent watch this episode with their child.

A notable episode ("Busted") featured the kids having an inadvertent brush with the law and given a Scared Straight!-style tour of an occupied maximum security prison, even contained utterances (by the jail's inmates) of the words "damn" and "bastard" (Cosby had appeared in the beginning of the episode advising viewers that those words would be used as part of the story's dialogue to realistically depict jail life).

there was an episode about the dangers of computer hacking too
this is pretty incredible considering the show stopped airing around 1984
Russell is on his way to the library to do research for his American history report when he encounters his classmate Greg Bowen, who helps by taking him home to do the research on his computer. Russell is impressed with Greg's hardware and does well on his history report, but later learns he's a hacker who illegally gains access to other computers to steal data that's not rightfully his. Some time later, authorities from the police computer crime task force appear at Greg's home as they've tracked his illegally accessing a hospital computer, significantly messing up their records. Greg runs off, and the gang spots him at a train bridge. He falls off when a train passes by, landing on a beam, and is in danger of plummeting to certain doom should another train pass. He's rescued in time and while recuperating at the hospital, promises his mother never to hack into other computers again.
Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids was a Filmation show, and (if I recall correctly) most of Filmation's library, except for some old PAL prints, was destroyed years ago. That's probably why only edited versions of some episodes are available.

Yeah, something to do about a fire which destroyed a lot of stuff -- but even their most obscure stuff (Ghostbusters (both series) and Hero High) have found their way to DVD.

I think the NTSC prints were discarded by Filmation's last set of owners, a group of investors led by L'Oreal. Less interested in making cartoons than in selling them globally, they shut Filmation down the day after they assumed control, as well.
(The Filmation library has passed from them to Hallmark to Entertainment Rights to its current owner, Classic Media/DreamWorks Classics)

Oh, okay. (Wow, what the hell would L'Oreal want with Filmation?)

It was the '80s. You could just as easily wonder what the hell R.J. Reynolds wanted with Nabisco (other than more money).
