You are the end result of a “would you push the button” prompt where the prompt was “you have unlimited godlike powers but you appear to all and sundry to be an impetuous child” – Zero, 2022
I just dreamed that Anonus and I took the nieces and nephews I don't yet have to Target to look at toys, which excited me almost as much as it excited the little girl.

Also we were driving a minivan, which was apparently one of two cars AU and I drove regularly, for some reason, despite not having children.

Why can't this dream be REAL?

Aunt Alice & Uncle (name omitted)

We're totally going to be those weirdo relatives that the kids grow up to tell stories about.

"My aunt had a basement full of traffic lights. Like, actual old traffic lights. And she had them wired up, too! Like, you pushed a button and the lights actually changed to show the walk sign. My brother and I spent hours playing with that."

"My uncle designed the news graphics for NBC 4. Like, if you turned on channel 4 and watched their newscasts, that was all stuff he did. I think they changed it a few years after he retired, but my aunt saved a bunch of recordings of it on DVD." (As it turned out, the poor kid misremembered; it was actually the graphics on WBNS.)

CENTRAL. YOU MUST TAKE MY CHILDREN TO TARGET. MY CHILDREN ARE IN NEED OF ENTERTAINMENT. ALL MANY OF THEM.

sis, our fleet of minivans is not at your command. besides, the seats are all filled with road signs at the moment.

CENTRAL, I HAD THIS NONDESCRIPT BUT LARGE NUMBER OF CHILDREN ON THE ASSUMPTION THAT YOU WOULDN'T FILL UP ALL THE MINIVANS.

maybe you should have mentioned that before

wait, we didn't buy this fleet until after you had children.

CENTRAL, I AM YOUR SISTER AND YOUR--

    queen

LOOK, IT'S BEEN YEARS NOW. I KNOW IT'S QUEEN AND NOT KING. SHEESH.

why can't you get their father to take them anyways

    HE'S STILL ON MARS

    wait

    wait, what?

I know it. In the dream I justified the use of the minivan with some nonsense about sliding doors and how it would make finding a parking space easier at Christmastime because we wouldn't have to worry about hitting the cars next to us with the doors

It's just...it's so hilarious to me that my literal dream life involves going to Target with AU to look at My Little Ponies with a four-year old girl. It's so...Central Avenue, you know?

I just read this on a video game forum

My friend Chris got a NES around 1986 or so. He heard a rumor that you could play Sega Master System games if you plugged them into the expansion slot at the bottom of the unit. Needless to say, it didn't work, and he gave me his copy of Space Harrier that he bought just for that. I still need to get an SMS one of these days, but that's for another thread.

    How

even the dumbest kids on our block weren't this stupid
  • Oh, yeah, that kinda reminds me: I might get eviscerated for saying this, but I think Sega should probably re-release Sonic Shuffle for PC.
  • THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS
Forsythe: Wow. While the video subsystems in the NES and the SMS were similar enough (they're both related to the TMS9918), the CPUs are totally different. You'd have to do what Coleco did with their Atari expansion module...

Really? I had no idea that the NES and SMS were that related in the video chipset department. I know the SMS is kind of like the Colecovision's (and MSX's) scalar big brother, but I had no idea that NES was similar.

Speaking of which, my NES that I ordered arrived today. Now I can fire up any MMC5 games that I have and toss out my crappy famiclones.

  • "People who play role-playing games need more than some pretty graphics and nonstop action to whet their claymores; they want depth and character and wit and drama. They want the thickest, most involving novel that they've ever read translated to their 15" screen, with themselves as the hero. That's what I love about people who play role-playing games. They're so reasonable."

Eh, there's some truth to that. I got bored and stopped being afraid of Amnesia when I realized dying meant so little.

Yeah. Apparently, when the Nintendo folks saw how well the ColecoVision port of Donkey Kong turned out, they decided to make the Famicom very similar on purpose. There are a few differences (the NES PPU isn't register-compatible, and the NES PSG is more like a lobotomized MOS 6581 than a TI 76489 or an AY-3-8910), but the principles of operation are pretty much the same.

This is specifically for light green boots [New Marines]: If you're going to wear jean shorts, then don't tuck your damn shirt in, and for the love of slutty stripper glitter please don't wear a braided belt with the end dangling down. Shit looks retarded. I'm starting to think that boots should have to have their civilian attire inspected by a gay Marine before they go on libo [liberty].

That's because of the whole "I remember that I know less about computers" bit. Coding in C isn't that hard, trust me. If I can do it, you can do it.

I've heard this before, but I've also heard that Coding in C is "Useless".

I've also heard that coding in any language that's not Python or Lisp is useless. I'm not sure if this has any merit, or if it's one of those internet superiority things.

Whoever told you these things has no fucking idea what they're talking about

Lisp is useful whenever you're learning about the basics of a programming language (that is, how programming languages work) but in the real world it's not really supported or used at all. As for Python, I have no idea because I dislike scripting languages.

C is as relevant as it's ever been. It's still the most practical programming language to use whenever you want to scrape as close to the metal (assembly) without actually messing with assembly language. C is also accessible and easy to learn.

  • Alright.

I didn't hear those things from anyone in particular, by the way, they just seem to be pretty common opinions amongst coding nerds.

Anyway, I dunno, I suppose I might tinker with it over the weekend in between D&D sessions and bouts of Halo 4.

That was not meant to sound so self-consciously geek, but it did anyway.
