In 1997 I asked my mother to make me a "Stupendous Man" cape like Calvin had in the comics
But she didn't want me to tie it around my neck like Calvin did, so she insisted on putting Velcro squares on it instead

But Calvin didn't have a costume for Spaceman Spiff, though.
Hehehe. I'm using them to tie down a particularly pesky battery holder in my IIgs.
Yes, there's a story here. It originally had one of those odd Tadiran batteries Apple used to love so much, and those are expensive and hard to get—they can't ship air—so I clipped it out and installed a cheap 2xAA battery holder from Radio Shack. Problem is, I used regular double-sided tape to hold it down...and double-sided tape isn't very strong. The glue on Velcro squares is a lot stronger and since it's Velcro, it'll be removable for service.
Oh, and I'd neglected the batteries for so long that they were leaking. :P Thankfully, alkaline battery juice isn't terribly dangerous once it's been sitting in air long enough; it absorbs CO2 and turns into carbonate.

It occurs to me that I've yet to see shipping in the traffic signal fandom

Is that the stuff that crusts over into old battery slots?
Yup, that stuff. It's better than it used to be; older zinc-carbon batteries used ammonium chloride, which is acidic and will rust steel wire (what the springs in most battery hoders are made of) to dust if you let it. Iron isn't attacked by alkali, so alkaline batteries will generally just make a flaky mess and not break anything.

So it occurred to the me that the technology for a basic traffic light seems to exist in Equestria, even if they have no need for them because they don't drive.
Makes me wonder what model would be most appropriate for the setting...the W.S. Darley & Co. Model D-200 seems appropriate, doesn't it?

Ugh getting laid off sucks. My mom was laid off several times while I was still in high school. My condolences :/
