You seem to be thinking about relationships a lot.

Open-source fonts are fun to tinker with!

I stumbled across ttfautohint, which applies FreeType's auto-hinting feature to a TrueType font file. So now I can have a version of FreeSans that doesn't look like crap on Windows at text sizes!
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
    FreeType exists, huh.
  • THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS
Yeah, FreeType's been around for ages; it's what most Unix distros use to render TrueType fonts these days.

As for relationships...I've been feeling just a tad lonely recently. I haven't been talking to Freezy all that much (y'know, I should probably just cut the crap and start calling her Ally, since that's her real name and I know I hated it when my first girlfriend back in 1998 insisted on calling me by my handle all the time, so...) and I think it's been bothering me. I just answered some messages of hers over on dA, though, and now I feel better.

The auto-hinting isn't nearly perfect, of course, but it is a huge improvement.

(Also, Windows' type rendering sucks in general, compared to FreeType or whatever it is Mac OS X does)

My obsessions' articles tend to be behind paywalls, as they tend to be years old.

Oh, mine are all behind paywalls as well. But my school provides me with access to otherwise paid-only news archives and I take advantage of that by using it to look up stuff that interests me.

I don't know; the only Doctor Who spin-off I actually watched was Torchwood.

I've been told it's no good. Unless I'd like "gay porn". :P

You know, I like the Ubuntu type family, but they seem so heavily associated with Ubuntu that it would seem weird to use them for anything else.

I imagine most "normal" (i.e., not nerdy as fuck) people wouldn't make this association, though.
  • THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS
I think it looks a lot like the Droid family, myself, or maybe some of Nokia's internal fonts.

Also, other people have made a whole bunch of fonts based on corporate logos, and no one seems to mind using those out of context (GTA3 made Larabie's Pricedown, which is based on The Price is Right's logo, incredibly famous, and around here Metro was using the Filmfonts Planet of the Apes logo font for a while as well). XD

Finally: I was just on DA talking to Ally, and I realised we've had a thread going for over a month, with no signs of stopping, and I'm pretty sure at least one of our other threads is even older. If that's not romantic, I don't know what is. ^_^

I have "Sunslammer" stuck in my head now. -eats a weird bug and doesn't even care-

Anklepants angers me. It looks like the Group W typeface, but not faithfully.

I'm not sure if CBS has anything that an accurate reproduction could be made from.

AU: Me too. Once you see the differences, you can't un-see them. :P And yeah, I'm pretty sure there's an official Group W typeface floating around somewhere, even if it's only a model sheet, because WJZ in Baltimore still uses it in their graphics.

Also, I was catching up on the Fetishes thread on TVT, and another Gog damn "No True Scotsman bothers with long-distance relationships" argument broke out. That particular topic bothers me so much (and people can be such bullies about it) that I'm tempted to holler the next time it comes up. Sure, I know, Most Tropers are Young Nerds and don't have the means to travel long distances, and I know there's been a lot of pukeyqoot troper couples floating around, but can we please stop with the bashing?

They didn't switch to the stupid CBS O&O stuff, did they?

KCNC did back on May 27, 2010, and last month they ditched Newstime (which they had used since taking the name "CBS 4" in September 2003) for CBS Enforcer. The good New Generation 2, fortunately, which is surreal there.
  • THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS
No idea; I haven't been in WJZ's broadcast area since 2008. They were still using "Chroma Cues" then, too!

As for the local affiliate, WUSA, I have no idea there either since I hardly watch broadcast TV anymore.

I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
...why do I like the mid-2000s version of "Chroma Cues" so much?

In 2008 I made up an alternate universe (not entirely of my own impetus, which was a thread on a forum I don't visit anymore) in which WJZ was bought by ABC (still owned by Capital Cities) from Westinghouse in 1997 (why, I never came up with an explanation). Sometime in the late 2000s, they adopted WLS's Hothaus graphics, but used their CBS O&O "wedge" logo instead of the Circle 7, with the ABC logo attached to it. That version of Chroma Cues was intact.

This universe was also the first time I used the name "ABC Stations Group" (which I later applied to ABC Inc's OTA station division.).

I have a newfound passion for design--which I'm starting to realize has been there all along--but I lack the necessary skills or knowledge to make anything of it.

    I'm not quite sure.

I should probably start looking into this stuff.
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
The logo I am making for Odyssey (the name Hallmark Channel would revert to upon an ABC Inc acquisition) is a thick black ring.

    It's not very inspired, though.
  • THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS
Speaking of Baltimore, I remember not liking Image News (what WBAL was using from 1997-2003 or so) because we watched a lot of WBAL when we were in Ocean City in 2001, and it reminded me of how crappy that trip went. That and it's about as Totally Radical (90s edition) as it gets; it sounds like it belongs on a FOX station. :P
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
I used to not like Image News when I first got into news music c. 2004, but grew fonder of it over time.

It's The X Package I don't like now, because I associate it with KDVR when it was a Fox O&O, and I didn't like them.
  • THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS
I liked the package WTTG was using in the early 2000s, which was pretty much the X Package with a bit of the CinemaScope Extension mixed in. I think it worked, somehow.

I also remember really liking We Work Well Together (WRC's Jimmy Hart Version of Chroma Cues, done by the same composer) and its replacement Working for You. And you can blame both of those on "lol high school Lee needs to grow up", since I wouldn't really call Working for You a good package until the national version came out in 1997, and the Music Oasis packages for WRC always had a reputation of being too sedate (in a town that was basically enjoying a repeat of the King riots due to the crack epidemic :P).

And you know, I do worry about gushing about Ally so much here. I'm afraid she'll find this and go into the "I am not your girlfriend, I never will be, and if you keep pressing the issue I'm going to have you banned from both DA and TV Tropes. Not only will you lose me, you will lose all your friends as well" spiel that one girl I liked ten years ago did. I keep telling myself that it's different this time, that the situation that happened in 2002 was the culmination of 2 years of dodgy behavior on my part and not part of a bona-fide effort to make a friend, but...I still worry, and I still think people think less of me than I do because I'm so used to imagining a relationship than actually being in one.

Heh. AU and I used to ditch our threads every few days because the "pagination" of Vanilla's PM system annoys us, but we eventually just got used to it.

Our current one dates to shortly after we became "official"--we decided to start a new PM conversation to symbolize a new chapter in our relationship.

    Awww, how sweet. ^_^

I'm not quite to that stage yet, but then, just having someone to talk to is surprisingly nice. Which is why I get irritated at people who are like "hurr durr ure not doin her u must a faig" -- just because I find someone attractive doesn't mean I want to fuck her brains out all the time. :P

And to be honest, that's why she got irritated with me back in August or so, when I was gushing about her in YF all the time; she didn't want people thinking we were a couple simply because I liked her, and she also didn't want Ivy getting all PTSD at me over what was really a minor faux pas and not an imminent danger to either of us. So I agreed to keep the exact extent of our a relationship a secret, at least as far as YF was concerned outside the Heap.

Let me tell you. About Fallen London.
Argh, I keep feeling like I'm going to fall asleep--I actually found myself nodding off. I think I'll stay here for another hour or two and then go home, hopefully it won't be one of those things where I'm tired now but totally awake later on.

Also, I upgraded this ancient Compaq to 320 MB (by stealing some RAM out of another machine that I don't like as much). It's behaving quite a bit better now. (As to why I'm not using the good laptop? It's currently pretending to be my TV right now. XD)

So earlier I was trying to think about what uses (if any) the FHWA typefaces have except road signs.

The only one I could think of is the lettering on school buses, which is usually--though not always--in FHWA.

Columbus PD also uses it to spell out "POLICE" on the back of their cruisers, which always struck me as odd because all the other lettering on the cars is in Helvetica.

    ...do I seem whiny?

Because a bunch of things I don't like happened today and I wanna be lazy.

I seem to be developing a corporate crush on Macy's, Inc. and I don't know where it came from.
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
I was thinking about them earlier today. Mainly how much I dislike their standardization.

    ...blame it on the parade.
  • You are the end result of a “would you push the button” prompt where the prompt was “you have unlimited godlike powers but you appear to all and sundry to be an impetuous child” – Zero, 2022
Their logo always struck me as somewhat feminine, somehow.
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
    Those thin proportions on "macy's".
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
I've always instinctively thought of Macy's as being a "feminine" store, if that means anything. Influence of the logo, maybe.
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
...you know department stores seem feminine. I'd blame the female-targeted marketing and female ad voiceovers.
  • You are the end result of a “would you push the button” prompt where the prompt was “you have unlimited godlike powers but you appear to all and sundry to be an impetuous child” – Zero, 2022
Also it strikes me as weird that their corporate logo uses a proper apostrophe instead of the little star used in the store's logo:
    image
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
    It's called "inattention to detail".
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
Hm. Actually, you're right. Pretty much all department stores seem vaguely feminine. Except for Sears, which is vaguely masculine, and Wal-Mart, which is vaguely mentally challenged.
  • Don't worry babby! Momma's here~~~~~!!!
